The Secret Service doesn't have a wide net of authority. They only investigate certain kinds of crimes.

From their website:

What types of crimes does the Secret Service investigate?

The Secret Service has primary jurisdiction to investigate threats against Secret Service protectees as well as financial crimes, which include counterfeiting of U.S. currency or other U.S. Government obligations; forgery or theft of U.S. Treasury checks, bonds or other securities; credit card fraud; telecommunications fraud; computer fraud, identify fraud and certain other crimes affecting federally insured financial institutions.

Basically, if you aren't the somebody important (protectee), they basically investigate financial crimes. I'm assuming they are investigating Fine for some kind of financial crime...but I'm not sure what the hell type of crime that could be.

Are they now trying to go all Al Capone on him? They know they can't get him on child molestation, so maybe they can dig up some financial fraud to get him convicted of something???

It's just strange to me that the Secret Service is involved. Maybe someone else can shed some light as to why they would be investigating?

Obama sent them, because he's a big North Carolina fan, and he wants to take us out of contention. (j/k)

what i heard was they were being used for their expertise in the possible retrieval of communications data and information. I am thinking it is relative to his computer use and with respect to his financial and phone records.

Perhaps that's the strategy they used to get the search warrant. Bernie has an insurance business. Maybe there have been allegations of payoffs made through his business or perhaps as a misappropriation of funds he'd been given by clients? Did he sell securities of any kind? Edit: I only ask as the items taken from his home seemed to be connected with his business, i.e. file cabinets with financial & business records.

well apparently from what i've learned from some posters below JB's friendship and loyalty to bernie were counterfeit!
all just surface fluff.a well disguised ruse if you will.why he's barely even seen or spoken to the man since 1976 !

Nah, I don't believe that. If she was, it would be a threat to National Security and you would have NSA, CIA and the FBI involved. He'd have to be drunk as hell too, so you'd have the ATF involved also.

I think it's more than a coincidence that Barnie Frank has decided to not seek reelection at the exact time of the Bernie scandal.

Barnie, Bernie...we should ask Frank what he knows about developing big men and what Fine knows about Fannie...

I was texting my buddy. this morning who is an attorney with the same question. Interesting that you would bring up Al Capone SeattleCuse bc he did too. Here' what he texted me in regards to this...

Secret service deals with money, finances, counterfitting, financial fraud, ect. They watch out for the treasury. So here's the deal as I see it...

State-looking at child molestation. Did the statute of limitations run out?

Fed-took kids across state line, interstate crime and feds have jurisdiction. But, statute of limitaions run out?

Secret service/treasury-finances from business involved in funding molestation in state or out, doing things with kids, ect. Could possibly get him on those charges. Why they took cabinets of financial records.

That's what I'm thinking kind of like Capone. Couldn't get him on killing or running illegal business, got him on tax evasion. Not paying taxes on money earned on illegal business.

Mike Waters answered this yesterday. It is because the 3rd accuser is within the federal SOL, and the alleged abuse occurred in another state. Forget the fact that his own father doesn't believe him, this has become more about these agencies one upping each other.

That clearly explains the Feds, but not the SS. Seems like it would be more of an FBI thing than SS.

I would bet every dollar I have that we have not heard or seen why they were really involved. I am sure it will be a bombshell.

I don't think the SS covers tax evasion, though. I believe the FBI and IRS have jurisdiction over federal tax evasion, but I suppose there could be some loophole involved there. Maybe the SS was brought in to tap his phones.
