...on our chances with Thomas Bryant. What am I missing here?

The NCAA was allowing us to postpone the 10 scholarship limit to the 2016-2017 season because we had 7 guys coming back, (Coleman, Okoboh, McCullough, Roberson, Gbinioje, Cooney and Joseph), and four commits, (Diagne, Lydon, Richardson and Howard), which would give us 11 players and put us over the limit. Rather than telling one fo the commits we had no scholarship for them due to the NCAA penalty, we could star the penalty the enxt year, when Gbinije and Cooney would have graduated and we'd have only 9 guys. That gave us an opening for Bryant, who could be a 12th guy for 2015-2016 and the 10th guy in 2016-2017.

But then McCullough declared for the draft, which means we have only 10 guys next year and no longer have the option of postponing the penalty. therefore, there's no scholarship for Bryant.

The only way we could get him is if someone else leaves to reduce us to 9 scholarship players or if the NCAA lessens the penalty on appeal, allowing us to have more scholarship guys. Other than that, forget it.

What have I got wrong?

The PS has already confirmed that we can sign Bryant. Go read the article. If we don't sign him, we can start the penalty a year early. It's an either/or at this point. Losing CMac may have helped us with TB.

I found this article:
http://www.syracuse.com/orangebaske...pact_syracuses_scholarship_situation_for.html

Which says:
"However, McCullough's departure for the NBA, along with the transfers of B.J. Johnson and Ron Patterson, means that Syracuse could actually start serving the NCAA's scholarship reduction penalty this year. That is, if Syracuse doesn't get a commitment from Bryant in the next week or so."

The NCAA decision said:
"Reduction in Athletics Awards.
The total number of athletically related financial aid awards in men's basketball shall be reduced by three awards during each of the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19 academic years. If the institution has already executed athletically related financial aid agreements to prospective student-athletes for the 2015-16 academic year that would prevent the institution from meeting this penalty, the institution has the option to begin the penalty with the 2016-17 academic year. I because of already executed financial aid agreements, the institution chooses to begin this penalty with the 2016-17 academic year, the institution must provide documentation of the date that the agreement was signed by the prospective student-athletes that prevented the institution from beginning the penalty with the 2015-16 academic year."

So how does Thomas Bryant committing in the next week or so allow us to postpone the 10 scholarship limit to 2016-17? He hadn't "already executed an athletically related financial aid agreement" at the time of the NCAA decision.

2 possible scenarios.

1. In reality, Patterson is still on the books.

2. While being appealed all sanctions are on hold.

Patterson and johnson are still both on scholariship. The semester hasn't even ended yet.

But do releases come into play.

I don't see how, the university is still holding up to their end of the bargain until the semester ends .

It's next year that matters. How many do we hVe in scholie for next year?

Cooney
Gbinije
Robe
Kaleb
DaJuan
Chino
Howard
Richardson
Diagne
Lydon

That's 10. But I think we get 11 with Bryant because of the appeal. Also, I fully expect that we'll get one of two things out of the appeal: either we get a one year reduction in the penalty (so three seasons instead of four) or we get a scholarship back for each year (so we'll have 11 for those years instead of 10).

Who knows, the way things went with PSU and Miami we may get everything back. SU is not going to lay down and take this.

did Ricardson, Howard, Lydon, and Diagne all sign there LOI's already?

Or 3? The deferral was already requested and confirmed with the required documentation.

By the same token, I assume that LOIs aren't considered to be officially "on scholarship" until they matriculate as students.
This is the same approach that dictates the football team doesn't need to be at the 85 player limit until the start of fall camp.
