It seems that every new recruit mentions our move to the ACC, especially the southern recruits.

It makes sense.

The kids want to play where their friends and families can watch them.

I frankly never thought of that when the ACC move was announced. I simply thought in terms of competition and stability.

The new conference affiliation is having a positive impact - it is up to us the fans and the University to step up and show a new dedication to making the program the best it can be - attendance, money, development of infrastructure.

Now is the time.

IMHO the only thing that will brig the casual SU fan back to the Dome is winning with exciting offense and stars.

Agreed. As a famous SU grad put it: "Just win, baby!" But realistically only expecting baby steps to that end for a while.

Winning is very important.

Style is most important. The Jason Hart teams, were grinders and had low attendance

I remember a few fans complaining in the 1990s that the team was not exciting enough.

Even though we won a lot, went to bowl games and drew fans to the Dome.

It was a silly complaint.

I really don't agree with your post at all.

When the team wins, style is just not that important.

And most fans agree - if the team wins a lot the fans come to the Dome.

People are different now then they were in the mid 90's. There wasn't internet access everywhere so the teams were a bit unknown but people were a bit more prone to optimism. I used to have to read Athlon and Lindy's for any preseason Syracuse preview being out of state. Now alot of people have their minds made up about the team before they even play a game.

Everyone wants entertainment and they want it now. People want points, look at the NFL and how it's progressed.

Winning is important, but winning with style is ideal. SU would draw better winning games like Oregon than we would winning games like LSU. I'm pretty firmly in the minority in that I watch the defense more intently than the offense in football game.

I agree with most of this. I hate that it is true, but I believe you're right. This is the "Slam Dunk Competition" generation -- the "Home Run Derby" generation. To a large degree, too many fans put the "Wow Factor" ahead of the game itself.

Though I do agree with OPA that fans turn out if SU is winning, and winning trumps style. But style appears to be increasingly important to the younger group of fans.

Well, all I know is that the folks at Ga Tech love watching the Rambling Wreck play and the Yellow Jackets are running an early 1970s option offense.

I happen to love that kind of football, but I think most would agree that nowadays it's an anachronistic way to move the ball - but Ga Tech wins and the fans seem very happy.

If the team wins - and wins a lot - very few will care how we move the ball - just as long as we move the ball and score enough to win.

I feel like people are starting to accept this, and I'm glad to see more people coming around.

I'm 28 years old and I'm sitting here remembering the "good old days" when the slam dunk contest and home run derby were entertaining enough. I think most folks are even bored with that anymore. I remember Isaiah Rider's between the legs east bay funk dunk in 1994 and it was a HUGE deal. Now every other player can do that without much effort. The home run derby jumped the shark a long time ago as well. The more people get, the more they want.

Winning will put more fans back in the seats, but more people will show up knowing we'll score in the 30s win or lose vs score in the teens win or lose. At least you walk out with some hihglights to talk about.

It's the obvious truth in our over stimulated, ADD generations and it's not going away anytime soon.

There was a good thread on here the other day about folks having maybe 7 channels to watch growing up. Now we've got 500 and can't find anything to watch.

Yup.

When was there ever 7 channels? Wehn I grew up it was 3, 5, 9 and 24. We couldn't get 9 and 24 because of our remote location and reception. Then it went from that to cable and that was always more than 7 channels.

The "Home Run Derby and Slam Dunk (this was actaully something started in the 70s by the ABA wasn't it?)" eras have soley to do with TV. If there was the same access back in the 20's they would have watched that, it's not about people but about avalability in my mind. I find the 3 point contest much more entertaining and difficult btw.

I always love your posts OPA, the only thing that I will add to what you are saying here is that Tech does run an older offense, but they score TONS of pts and have fabulous athletes. That said, without much of a passing game, there are fans that shy away from their style, even though they win. I honestly don't care how we win, just that we do. 7-6 or 42-10 games, doesn't bother me truly, although my heart would be healtier with a wider margin.

Are you guys really comparing what draws football fans in Georgia to what draws football watchers to the Carrier Dome. Apples and zebras.

They changed the rules to make it more exciting and offensive oriented.

People who don't think scoring and offense matters are crazy.

Offense sells tickets, defense wins games.

There are exciting teams that dont win.

You have to win in CNY

CNY loves swag, you don't only have to win, you got to have swag. Just like WW said, bringing the swag BACK to Swaggercuse. CNY loves winners and they will show up, then there are those who show up to see the swag. I know one of the board stat people could look up W-L records, attendance #'s and most importantly who the star players were and the swag they bought to their position. I'm not sure, but IMHO, I believe you will see how swag plays a role in Dome attendance numbers. Everybody loves a winner, everybody jumps on the bandwagon when you win big and look good doing it. I know some of the more mature fans don't like it, as for me, as long as the player is doing his job, I love it. I know it sounds crazy, but I know a few of the "bandwagon" types. Just my 2 cents:noidea:

Yep, there are. Carolina. 7th in the NFL in attendance. But that's not the point. Put a boring product on the field and lose...you'll have low attendance. Put an explosive product on the field and lose...you'll have better attendance than a boring product and losing.

Of course you are going to get people when you win. Every city, town, and hamlet in the country is filled with bandwagon fans (except maybe Green Bay and Oakland). Syracuse more than most.

Win=fans.
Boring and lose=least fans.
Entertaining and lose=you'll get people.
Entertaining and win=you're Oregon.

That is really and outdated reference. Last year the Pats, Packers, and Giants all ranked at the bottom of the NFL in defense. 2 played in the Super Bowl and one didn't lose a game till November and had a great season.

I know that is the NFL and this is college. But unless you are Alabama or LSU where every starter on your defense is a future 1st and 2nd round draft pick, offense wins games!
