Absolutely agree! If Norton is as good as advertised, that should significantly improve the KO coverage team. Remember, this will be HCDM's first year with a full roster which should help shore-up ST's overall.

Getting extra kickoff yardage will be HUGE for specials. That would also help our kick coverage [which was poor last year].

What will help more is the 5 yards closer kickoffs are taken from.

There's that myth again. The full roster wont play.

So what? The full roster won't play, but some on that expanded roster certainly will be involved on ST [and hopefully emerge as contributors].

Having more athletes > having fewer athletes.

Along with having a kickoff guy who gets more distance. The goal is to not hemorrhage kickoff / punt yardage -- combined, those two factors will pay dividends to our kick coverage. Having more speed and tackling better would also help the cause [obviously]

Including ST, how many players do you think appear in a game?

About 50. But that doesn't change the fact that having more athletes > than having fewer athletes to choose from.

We have a much greater chance of having 50 players who are more equipped to be contributors to a contending bowl team with an approximate roster of 85 than we do finding 50 contributors on a 65 player roster.

You are over estimating our new kickoff guy. Give him time. Right now he kicks on a consistent basis no further than our other guys. His biggest value if he can win the job is allowing our FG kicker to do just that. Last year we were one of only 3 BE teams that had their FG kicker do kickoffs too.

He supposedly gets more hang time though which is obviously key even if it's the same distance.

True when he doesn't line drive it. He has a ways to go with consistently. He'll get there though I think.

As to Rene does anyone have stats on how many punts were returned vs fair caught? I honestly dont remember him trying to return more than 2 all year.

While not ideal I will take a guy who isn't that explosive but catches punts as opposed to a more explosive guy who costs us 10-15 yards on bounces when they aren't caught.

Why can't we have both?

Are the rest of our potential return guys all going to be droppers?

If they are, just send all 11 for the block, hope the oblong ball bounces your way (50% chance).

If we can make teams go 75-80 yards it will make a huge difference. I don't know how many time our momentum got killed after a score by letting a team start at the 40 and then respond with a score.

Wayne Morgan at PR. Problem solved.

pic of shamarko's hand in today's pics. bandaged up pretty heavily.

I'll respectfully disagree Bees. Having better athletes will certainly help specials. Typically 55-65 players see the field any given game. I would much rather prefer those special teamers possess superior athletic skill than their predecessors.

We had way too many walkons or true freshman on specials the last few years. There's a major difference in kick coverage if your guys can get down the field even a few tenths of a second faster - we'll probably gain close to five yards in pressure alone, especially compounding that with a kick off specialist that get hang time.

I'd rather see Wayne Morgan running down the field than Joe Nassib.

So true, so true!

KC, I'm sorry man but you have to let this go. You can't return a punt when you are immediately surrounded by the other team before you get the ball. That's our punt team's fault.

We don't disagree. I said we don't use 85. If we have 60 guys that can contribute we're fine. Having 85 instead of 75 (thus a "full" roster), doesn't mean specials will be better in any single season.

Kills ya when you only have 1 guy that can kickoff and he plays with a groin issue most of the season. Nice to have a couple options now.
