Interesting piece on the rising cost of. . .

How about Art Briles making $4.24 mil?!
Steve Addazio - $2.6 mil
Pat Fitzgerald - $2.5 mil
David Shaw - $2.25 mil
David Cutcliffe - $2.05 mil

These are the other private schools. This is why we need to be AT LEAST paying $2.8-3 mil/year. Let's not be with the average, but ABOVE the average.

All I've heard is that Dino is making around 4x as much as he was at Bowling Green. Not sure what his bonus and incentive options were, but let's assume his total comp was around $500-600k. This makes his pay here around $2-2.4 mil/year. Much better, but still behind BC.

Start winning games and I'm sure Syverud could pull some strings to increase that closer to $3 mil. If not, there is no question a bigger school will come calling with a better offer if he can show he can win here.

we will need $$ to keep him FROM jumping to a similar school like BC. the $$ to get him here should be lower than others based on his current pay.

he will get paid.

just get me wins 1st...

Exactly, he wins games, he will get paid, I'm sure. Lets let him win first before we worry he is underpaid. Heck he just got a 1.5 million dollar raise. He's making 33% more than our last coach. That's not too bad. :noidea:

No, that's not what I'm saying. It's just crazy how much further we are behind everyone when it comes to paying coaches. Nauseating, actually.

You certainly pay for what you get.

but thing is, who would you want then?? whos out there that we should have that we should be paying big $$ for??

there is no reason to give dino any more than what we gave him, none.

why because BC is paying adazzio more??

this is the perfect scenario for SU.

'promote' a guy who gets a monster pay raise, who then 'promotes' a lot of his staff as they will get pay raises...then let them win and pay to keep.

everybody should be happy right now.

deal with the anger in future and if we run off a couple of 9 or 10 win seasons and then if syvy wont pay when Dino asks...get your pitchforks ready.

I also don't think anyone knows the exact contract terms.

I came to conclusions other than "SU is still not paying its coaches enough". (See bees and UEO above re: how much we're paying, and if it's sufficient.)

Rather--it is becoming more difficult for non-P5 schools to hire P5 coordinators as head coaches, because those guys are making more in their current gigs than they would as head coaches at G5 programs. The piece notes that the exception to this is the American, but I think the reason some AAC programs came up with the cash is their hope to move up in case of a Big XII expansion (Houston, Memphis, maybe even SMU).

Which brings up the macro point--the widening gap between the haves and have-nots. It's only been about 3 years since the P5-G5-everybody else split was formalized, and the new world order has already put the non-Power 5 schools behind the 8-ball in the competition for quality coaching. Our concern should be that no rigid caste system among the P5 conferences leaves many of us breathing the exhaust of the SEC and B1G.

As an aside, this article states that Babers was earning less than $449K at BG.

Who is the "we" that should paying for all of this? Do we have a billionaire alumnus who is going to outspend Drayton McClain at Baylor? Uncle Drayton sold the Houston Astros for $700 million because he needed pocket money that week.

This thread has gone in a completely different direction than I intended.

I'll start with you... what? The SCHOOL should be paying that or figuring out who should pay that. Not my job, that's on Syverud and Coyle. Pretty simple.

I also don't think anyone knows the exact contract terms.

This is correct, but I think I'm in the ballpark based on what I've heard.

Again, it's not necessarily RIGHT NOW, but ever since P was fired. We needed to keep up with college salary game (not with the Bama's, Michigan's of the world, but our peer schools). If we had been keeping up over the years, the increases nowadays wouldn't be such a big deal.

And for the record, I love the Dino Babers hire and the only person I would want differently is Art Briles himself.

Lets worry about that problem when it becomes a reality. I think we could be surprised in the future that Dino decides to stay put a bit longer than many think. I am hopeful but he has a ton of work to do next 2-3 years, a TON.

oh i agree, a TON of work.

i also dont think hes going anywhere. he will be 55 at next kick, assuming we have success (gulp) he will be pushing or will be 60...wheres he going to find a better job than us at that point? it would be smarter for him to build a legacy and stay another 5 years+ and get a 'statue' of himself built at manley...

Agree 100% and I have a feeling he might be thinking the same, guy has been going full speed for 30 years to get where he got last week. Sure they may be a ceiling at Syracuse but I don't think he will see it for 4-5 years. Who knows, maybe he can bust through it and then retire in 10 years
