Interesting Syracuse recruiting story from NY Times.

Nothing revelatory in the article. Zagoria parroted a lot of things that have already been said. If anything, seeing it in black and white made me even more concerned about the transition to Hopkins. We are entering very unsteady waters. Check that. We are already in them.

I will say the one thing that is total bs is the notion that opposing coaches aren't using JB's impending retirement in negative recruiting. High school coaches aren't going to acknowledge that, even off the record. And it's also being used against us in AAU circles, and that may just as important (and detrimental).

That was article by Zagoria cto. My god I trusted you and read it and didn't even check the author until the 3rd mention of our investigation which seemed out of place. Now I have to take a shower.

I have it on good authority it's definitely being used against us.

"The New York Times is a phony paper that's going out of business."

I guess this should put to rest the thoughts that Hopkins>HC isn't a done deal.
I'd be very surprised if the transition isn't being used against us. If not by the head coaches of other programs, then by their assistants. Someone, somewhere is at least whispering about it.

So clearly the announcement was a bad idea. Very bad. There is zero value add to everyone knowing jim's last game.

Any chance JB (who is a legend and deserves next year if he wants it) might move up his retirement date?

It's not like we're bringing in some monster class that we need to keep in tact. It seems both Brissett and Sidibe are cool with playing for Hop.

Its starting to feel like a "we need to rip the band-aid off" kind of situation to move forward.

Why anyone still believes it isn't a done deal, when all evidence for a long while has indictated he will succeed JB, is beyond me.

Certainly there's a chance, if only because JB likely loathes the thought of a farewell tour and the attention it will bring. My guess is his family would like to see him get the kind of sendoff he has earned and deserves, but in the end JB will decide when it's time to go.

“I think without question the fact that they’ve been open about the transition plan and everybody knows what’s going on makes it much easier for Mike." There you have it.

Come on changing the plan would be out of character. They've been very open, upfront and kept everyone informed of exactly what is going on with the transition, no backtracking now.

I actually had to laugh at that quote. I know many here will say that the plan has been announced for a long time and its been plain as day and everyone has known it; but on the other hand, until the last six months or so I've always felt like its been more of an "idea" than a plan.

Almost as if someone said, JB 2017-18 should be your last year, after that season you'll retire and Hop will take over and JB said "Yeah that sounds good, maybe we'll do it that way...I'll let you know." Has JB really openly acknowledged that he will not be here in 2018-19?

Yes, he said it very firmly in one of his recent radio shows.

Our PG recruiting isn't addressed in that article and that is our biggest problem right now.
I am hoping he decides he doesn't want another year of grinding out a regular season after the season ends. JB doesn't seem like the guy who wants all the warm and fuzzy farewell tour.

Nice article.
Although it would have been better with a quote or two from Mike Hopkins on how he'll follow a 40-year dynasty.
Maybe even something fresh from Boeheim...or the AD...or the assistants doing the recruiting.

Ok, some say that JB's leaving and MK's taking over the reins combined hurt the recruiting. So what is SU to do? Isn't it better to announce who is the future head coach rather than leave it open? Now that could be used as negative recruiting! Talk about kids waiting and seeing! Was JB suppose to suddenly retire and let the school spend months looking for a head coach, would that have HELPED recruiting? There was no way SU could have gotten an established hc prior to JB's retirement, especially an nationally know one who many say here would be "easy" for Su to find. Any head coach with the reputation akin to JB's leaving was going to "hurt" recruiting. I think that the way it was handled was probably the best.

It's more than possible, of course, that coach Hop will show the same tenacity and will to win (did anyone get more floor burns than him ever, other than maybe Kong) that he did as a player and in his own way be a more energetic recruiter and tireless, innovative coach. Just sayin.

The transition is absolutely being used against us. I mean how could it not be. The Hopkins thing has been addressed so many time now it was put to bed over a year ago. It will never be put to bed for people that don't like the plan and therefore refuse to believe it.

ok let's just say that hopkins is doing more behind the scenes than we'll ever know . ok. and we all agree that JB is still on the top of his game. ok.
so tell me who slides into the spot as "coach in waiting" and picks up all of mike's hidden former duties ? cuz obviously coaching here is a 2 man job.

Furthermore he is ridiculously modest about his accomplishments as an SU player.

And that's a GOOD thing.
