I would read it as him being humble...he seems like a kid that will be a quiet leader and respectful to the coaches.

FWIW, the staff is very high on Thompson, the player. When talking about players in general, his name was brought up specifically "If you think "X" is going to be a player, wait until you see this TE from Michigan."
