Iowa AD furious at McCaffery for his antics last night...

Smart move by the AD. McCaffery comes in and saves his program, now he has to apologize for something that a lot of coaches use as a last ditch motivational tool.

I'm sure there are more than a few east coast jobs that will open up in the next couple years that mccaffery will be a little more motivated to look into after this power play by his AD.

So no chairs thrown, no players pushed/hit, just a coach that got mad at officials for bad calls, got T'd up, and thrown out. I don't see the issue. You need to chill Mr. AD.

He cost his team that game. I think that warrants something. Also this is not the first time he has lashed out about the officiating against wisky. Happened last year too.

McCaffery is a good coach, but he is nuts. He did a good job at Siena, but his antics get really annoying. He threw a temper tantrum against Michigan State not to long ago and threw a foldup chair during a timeout. McCaffery isn't going to be at Iowa that much longer if he pulls that crap. This country is too PC for any coach to get away with this stuff. What he did was wrong, but 10-15 years ago it wouldn't have been that big a deal. John Thompson got 3 technical fouls in 1990 Syracuse-Georgetown game at the Dome, and taunted the crowd, but McCaffery goes nuts and its a big deal. McCaffery needs to calm down because Iowa looks really good this year.

The Hawkeyes definitely had that game in hand before Fran's tantrum. Sconny has a bunch of good shooters (same as always), have a legit 3/4 in Dekker but are iffy at the point and have no real inside presence. Honestly, their '12 team was better than this one.

You don't often see an AD throwing his coach under the bus like this... On the other hand, the five foul shots sank by the Badgers after the two T's, probably cost Iowa the game.

I had season tickets throughout Fran's tenure at Siena so it's no surprise about his Irish temper. However there is a big difference between having a temper and costing your team a game (and potentially your career down the road). I watched the game and was surprised that he got as upset as he did. We like Fran a lot but he did step over the line. It's unfortunate that this will be on his resume now. It was so momentus that when it happened last night all of the basketball pundits blew up twitter with it.

In a non-funny coincidence, another former Siena coach (and Oswego State), Mike Deane also is well known for having his share of run-ins with refs as well.

Watch the plays again... the officiating BLOWS. Those were not fouls. Further examples of the fleecing of college hoops. Should he have flipping his twice and got 2 tees? Something has to chage with college offciating. it has ruined the game.

I listened to him on the ESPN college bball podcast with Andy Katz and Seth Greenberg. He wouldn't admit that those 4FTs + possession were the turning point of that game. McCaffrey also kinda blamed his assistants for not pulling him away. Their job is to look out for the head coach, etc.

I woudn't compare McCaffery or anyone else to the biggest #$(*&#! in the history of college basketball.
(OK, Dave Bliss tried to cover up a murder...but let's not nitpick).

In my post a couple above yours I was going to mention that I thought the assistants did a poor job but I am surprised that he alluded to that. It happened pretty quick but not quick enough that the assistants couldn't have done a better job pulling him back. They tried but obviously not well enough.

He led Siena to back-to-back wins in the NCAA Tourney. Both times as 13 seeds I believe. As a Siena grad, he's ok in my book but needs to calm down a bit.

Getting thrown out of a game used to be much more common than it is now. I remember JB got tossed from a pre-season game a few years back against St. Rose.

They were a 9 seed the 2nd time in 2009 and beat Ohio State in 2OT during the first round. Siena gave Louisville a decent game for 30 minutes in the 2nd round. McCaffery is a good coach he just needs to calm down a little.

I don't think this statement ...

"I've met with Coach McCaffery regarding last night's ejection from the game in Madison. He knows he crossed a line of acceptable behavior and accepts responsibility for his actions," Barta said in a statement issued by the school. All staff at the University of Iowa fully support the Big Ten Conference's sportsmanship policy's fundamental elements, including civility and respect toward opponents and game officials. Fran has my full support moving forward."

constitutes "throwing the coach under the bus." The AD had to be seen to deal with it, and he did so, however this was about as PC as you can get. I didn't see the presser, if the AD even appeared at it so I don't know how he comported himself. But "furious?" C'mon now ...

The A.D. is correct. He represents the school and the state. Can't act like a jackass. Plus, he cost his kids the game.

Indeed he is correct. But that's not "furious." At least not publicly. In fact, the statement is so categorically formulaic as to suggest the AD didn't appreciate the officiating either. Anyway, does anyone know whether it was the same ref who tagged him for both?

It wasn't. On the video, the first ref gives him a T and he goes even crazier and a second ref comes in and T's him up

As for costing them the game, while that might be true, it also might not be. Anything that happens after an event isn't by any means assured to have happened if that event(in this case his antics) had not occurred. I don't remember how much time was left, but if I recall correctly it seemed to be plenty of basketball time and the large lead had already slipped a great deal before the T's. Certainly the technical put his team in a tougher situation than before though. As someone above mentioned though, sometimes that can fire up your team, not that that was necessarily his intent as the poster stated.

I can't remember if the JT situation were later in the game or not, but as best I can remember it seemed to have a bigger impact on the outcome of that 'Cuse comback. I could be wrong though, memory isn't my strong point. Either way, I'm fairly certain Coach McCaffery feels bad but felt he was doing the right thing at the time and may seek to get medicated like a large percentage of Americans to stabilize his moods closer to average, although not being average is likely a key ingredient in getting him to where he is now.

In situations like this, I always refer to the "what would happen at my place of work" rule of thumb.

and.....yeah...I doubt even a corporate higher up could act like that and not get from their bosses.

The lack of respect given to game officials in all sports at all levels is really ridiculous. Could officials do a better job? In many cases probably yes, but does anyone really think they are intentionally blowing calls or intentionally trying to favor one team over another? I don't.

You see highly visible guys in the pros or in college berate an official. Then you go to youth sporting events from high school down to little league and watch coaches, parents and players abuse officials. Half the time the people complaining are complaining not because the call was truly wrong but because it was called against their team. Why anyone would want to officiate a game is beyond my understanding??
