At the time a viable option was for those three schools to join with other independents and members of the Metro Conference to form an east coast all-sports league.  That league would have featured: Syracuse, BC, Pitt, Miami, Florida State, and Virginia Tech, among others.  
 
So it's interesting (maybe only to me) that in a lot of ways our move to the ACC has been 20+ years in the making.  We've traded some of what that previous membership would have been (Rutgers, Temple, WVU, ECU, Louisville, Cincy) for what's in the ACC, but I think that's actually an upgrade all things considered.
