Shaf could be retained as defensive coordinator if it was the right fit with the incoming coach? The man loves the cuse and making 500-700k as a coordinator in the place he knows and loves without having to uproot his family makes some sense. I do realize this dream of mine is dependent on just how bitter shaf is after the firing and what his residual relationship would be with Coyle. Shaf doesn't seem like a man that would have sour grapes. Frost + Shafer working in harmony would be pretty fantastic. While I am at it, would love to see daoust and Acosta stay too for the reasons stated in previous posts. Looking forward to Saturday. Gonna get to my section 115 seat hoping that Shaf might come out and warm up his defensive backs as he has done in the past. Let's show up and provide a warm send off for Shaf and his staff!

Yes, it's crazy. I think Shaf will be running a defense at a FBS or MAC school next year, just not SU.

Competitors want to compete. Shaf is a competitor.
Why would he drop down to FBS or MAC. He has been at the highest level for DC. I could see him jumping at the Michigan DC, if Dunkins gets a head coach job. Plus why not watch Wolfgang play his senior year?

To funny I actually mentioned this time some one today!! I love his style of D !

By FBS I meant P5. sorry. I mentioned MAC because of his previous ties there.

Given the number of kids in this program that are so incredibly loyal to him, it would never work. Many kids would ignore what the new guy is saying in favor of Shafers ideals. Hell Shafer might even publically support the new guys stuff, and the kids would still entrust their loyalties to Shafer.

This doesn't get into the ego crushing demotion for shafer. It can't feasibly work. Now that he's fired, both sides need to move on.

Absolutely, he will get a very prominent P5 defensive coordinator gig

Agreed. Highly likely.
Possibility of Michigan or... Clemson, depending on whether their DC's get HC offers, and accept them.

Worst case, he takes next year off with pay, watches Wolfie play ball, then takes a P5 DC job (or maybe a MAC HC job) the following year.
SMFS is totally going to land on his feet. He is *very* well-regarded in the college coaching fraternity.

I'm sure Michigan would love turning another former Syracuse coach into a DC. What could go wrong?

Ya, ya, ya, sarcasm and all... You do realize that SS and Harbaugh have worked together in this capacity before? And, that they have a really good relationship?

I'll say this again, Shafer ain't Gerg, he's had really good defenses since 2000.
He's very respected in this industry as a Defensive Coach. Well, I shouldn't even say defensively, he's very well respected in general.

Right, but analyzing the time that they spent at Michigan under Rich Rod isn't fair to either of them.

Wonder how Michigan fans would react to bringing Shafer back. They have long memories and can make life difficult. But Harbaugh probably has enough fan equity already for them to blame the past on Rich Rod.

Big shoes to fill though. Michigan D was shutout city this year.

If the ACC coaches high praise of SS coaching ability is true, then SU won't be able to afford him as a DC to begin with because a top tier P5 school will scoop him up once their DC gets a HC job. I wouldn't want to stay here if I were him anyway.
