hitting coach. I hope the aim here is to increases the BAs of some players like Tex and McCann. Singles are just as important as HRs with RISP!! Just get the freaking ball to the green part of the outfield and big innings will far more extensive than this year. Sure we will see the bombers occasionally pop a ball out to the fans but probably not the quantity that has been seen in past years unless someone gets super hot or a power laden rookie shows up to give the fans interest.

Long's aim was not to raise BA?
I never saw any adjustments to that end aside from McCann's going to left field on occasion and I think that was more him than Long Tex was going after low and outside pitches the whole season. His stance from the lift side was too open and it cost him and the team RBIs. If the Yankees thought that he was doing his job but the players themselves were failing he would still be the hitting coach. The best way to get a batter going in the right direction is pushing for a level swing with the idea of taking the pitcher's head off. Thats figuratively speaking of course but the back up the middle theory is the goal An upper cut swing is a guaranteed way to strike out excessively Susuki has been successful with that swing of his because he keeps the bat in the flight path of the ball. Its a bit like geometry. The pitch is rarely a straight line but the point of contact is decreased by that upper cut swing. A linear swing makes for more contact. The faster the swing the higher the chance that the contact propels the ball to the green in the outfield and in some cases ,to of the field With RISP a single is all you need to get runs on the board. If the ball rides the foul line in the outfield it usually good for at least a double and if the runner is fast maybe a triple. Thats what makes the game fun for your team as a fan. Learn from foul balls and previous at bats what the pitcher has and go from there.

The only thing less important to a MLB level club than a hitting coach is the manager.

I can't agree with that. The manager must set the tone of he team and call plays like when to steal and when to sacrifice as in bunt and or hit and run and pitching changes and the rotation and handling of the bull pen and its use over the season.George "The Boss" thought that his manager was important enough to fire them if the team lost three in a row. Now yes he was an emotional wealthy dictator when it came to his team and the love-hate thing he had for Billy Martin was proof of that. George made sure the Yankees had the best players available on the field and expected the team to produce. He wasn't afraid to put young players on the field if they displayed the right stuff as he did with Jeter." Cashman would have been gone by now spending tons of $ on players that were of little use due to age and health issues. A guy like Teixeira wouldn't be tolerated by George and his off season work ethic on the golf course. Beltran becoming as fragile as crystal goblet in a centrifuge he would have torn Cashman apart.

So you want veteran players to all of a sudden change their stance, swing, philosophy. Something they have done for 20, 25 years?

Nah...they should keep doing what they are doing as it obviously is still effective...The Yankees are in the World Series again after all...ummm...wait a minute...

Of course, the 400+ position players that are not in the WS should change everything as well
