SU needs to learn from it and move on. For a lot of reasons, the moment the LSU game finished two weeks ago, I felt bad about this game against South Florida. Then when I saw that the Bulls' defense played well against a pretty good Memphis offense, I was more concerned because that told me that SU's defense would have to play big for SU to go on the road and beat this Bulls team. Unfortunately, SU's defense is young and lacks experience. Right now they often read poorly, struggle to get off blocks and take poor angles.

Credit goes to the Bulls offense for taking what the defense gave them and executing throughout the game. The Bulls had some early success running a similar play up the middle that LSU ran, and then they worked the edge with Mack and with screen play. The Bulls picked up a crucial first down on 3rd and 14. I think it was early 4th quarter before the other big first down pick up that came off of the SU personal foul penalty. SU had just pulled to within 7 points. The Bulls were back in their own territory, and they ran a screen to pick up the first down. The Bulls blocking was solid, but I hope that play, and others like it, ends up being very instructive for this young SU defense. On offense, it was a tale of two halves for SU. I thought Dungey made plays all over the place and played really well against a good defense, especially for a true freshman starting his first game on the road. Fredericks is very exciting as well. The Dungey to Fredericks TD was the kind of play we've all been waiting to see for a long time. The offense ran a lot of option in the first half without really pounding the rock. During the second half the offense played much better until the cramping.

From the opening kickoff some of the decision making was foggy. At times SU looked cautious, a beat slower than I expected and on defense they needed to be more crisp. This SU defense is young and needs to find its identity. I see a lot of potential. Some of these mistakes will lead to growth as kids absorb their painful lessons. As always, it's one game at a time and each game always ends up being its own universe. Moving forward, SU has 7 more week-long workshops to be blue collar and to build something. As Jim Harbaugh talked about yesterday, build that healthy callous. Go Cuse!!

I really thought that all the unsuccessful running plays killed a chance of getting going. I know Dungey was far from perfect but I didn't see all the bad passes and plays others apparently did. What I saw was consistent penetration giving the wide plays and options no chance to get started as USF defenders were in the backfield all afternoon. Eric seems like the kind of kid who would draw plays in the dirt with a stick and make stuff happen. IMO, that's when the offense shines...open it up and let him be aggressive. There were 8-9 guys around the line of scrimmage all day, something that is not conducive for running. Open it up before we are down 2 TDs and I think good things will happen.
