It is taking much longer than thought...but the ACC and Orange Bowl competitors are being worked through slowly. It probably will not come to light until after the Champions Bowl media rights are assigned--and exected to be around $80 million (Rose Bowl dollars). Now according to source the Orange Bowl probably will not get that much--but DO NOT FORGET--ACC has media rights and does not have to split dollars 50%-50% with competitor (like Rose and Champion for PAC 12/BIG and SEC/Big 12--to get teams it wants it would need to only pay-out more than the tier below the Rose/Champions/Orange...and also ACC controls Orange Bowl dollars even if it is a semi final bowl and no ACC team in it.

ESPN is doing everything possible not to let the ACC get hurt in all of this...the ACC is all in with ESPN and is the EAST Coast conference...so ESPN is working overtime on keeping the ACC competitive including (again source) trying to make sure FSU does not go by-by...and that Notre Dame needs a conference as generally indicated in CBS's Dodd's write-up. As read below, Notre Dame may not make it to a bowl game in 2012 and 2013 as it has used up its BE tie-ins (of course BE could bend over again in some way) In fact, Swarbrick is quoted as saying at end of article:
"We can't fix the next two years, but after that we need some greater predictability--could that mean conference tie in" ? It is going to be interesting over the next month or so...so hold on for a up and down ride but the ACC feels it will come out okay...so in the mean time...go 'Cuse--make us proud!!

We've had this discussion before but if the ACC is not going to split $$$$ 50/50, or close to it, and keep the lions share for their team, they will never get the type of reams the others get and will be a secondary bowl with other conferences 3rd place teams usually.

I can see this becoming a "best of the rest" bowlgame with the highest ranked from SEC/Pac/B1G/B12/ND getting the spot.

Bees, perhaps this will be a better explanation. Take the Rose Bowl for example...it must be split 50-50 among the Pac 12 and B1G. That is $40 million each conference. Now the Orange Bowl...say it gets only $60 million...the ACC decides how to divy up with competitor. So far there is no other bowl out there giving $10 million per team except Rose and Champion; so ACC offers $10 million to competitve team in Orange Bowl...the ACC gets $50 million...and what do you know it is more than either the the teams/conferences in the other two major bowls. We do not know what the Orange Bowl will actually get but 75% of other two major bowls...seems reasonable. Fact is, would the B1G, SEC, Pac 12, Big 12 or Notre Dame turn down up to $10 million to play in OB with their second-third team in conference...and always OB can choose anyother team in top 12...I think OB and ACC sitting pretty....more to come soon.

Interesting article and there are a number of ways to look at this.

"What we have to do, it's no secret, is not be in this [current] position," Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick told CBSSports.com recently. "It's not manageable."
1) ND may be in a difficult post-season situation:

a) If ND stays with an expanded Big East with 14 football teams, they may not be able to gain access to desirable second tier bowls unless the Big East improves its bowls.

b) They could perhaps face new pressures from the new football schools to play a minimum number of Big East football games in exchange for access. Who does ND want to play routinely in the new Big East, aside from Navy?
More importantly, would the new Big East require ND to rotate among schools?

2) The best OB situation would be an ACC opponent that had the highest ranking outside the playoff bowls, excluding teams in the Rose and Champ bowls. That could easily result in a top 10 ranked opponent, depending on who gets into the playoffs and the rankings of the Rose and Champ bowl teams.

Although some of the other conferences might like to get a 50% revenue split from the OB, there is competition from the Big 10, 12, PAC, ND and a wild card top ranked team to also participate.

As long as the other major conferences are gaining 50% revenue from "their" exclusive bowls, it seems unlikely that would be a requirement and as long as the OB payout beats the one other major non-playoff bowl, the OB would likely end up with not only a highly ranked non-ACC team but as mentioned above, the ACC should certainly receive a payout equal to the other 4 major conferences for its bowl as well as the payout when the OB is one of the playoff bowls.

3) What I get from this article is:
that Swofford considers ND's postseason bowl access to be a source of concern;
that making a deal via the new Big East for second tier bowl access may not be a great option;
that the ACC really doesn't need to make a special deal with ND for a successful OB;
if ND wants long term access to ACC second tier bowl games, they have a decision to make as to how many regular season ACC teams they are willing to play and are they willing to rotate among all ACC teams, for starters.

4) I would be very surprised if ND and the ACC work out a special relationship, but this article is a good explanation of some of ND concerns.

"If the Orange Bowl hook-up isn't finalized, N.D. could be in a dire situation. Starting in 2014, in any given year there may be only three at-large spots available out of 12. If only three spots are open, a qualified Notre Dame most likely would get one of them. But the Orange Bowl agreement would make it a certainty and make it more lucrative."

Depends upon how much the ACC is willing to pay to the "visiting" team.

That's what I said. If they don't pay what the Rose or Champions is paying, they will be 2nd fiddle to them. It doesn't matter that the OB will pay more than the Cotton Bowl or others. If they can't pay what the Rose and Champions is paying, they are not the big bowl. They will get like you said, the 2nd and 3rd place teams in their conference.

But we knew that going into this situation. The ACC has been "odd-bowl-out" the entire time. The only thing that gives them some semblance of flexibility is the lack of association with a specific conference.

i think the percentage will be based on conference. sec will get the highest % for being in the game with bigten and big 12 probably next in line,then nd/ bigeast or wildcard.

as for percentage i see it in this range:

SEC 43%
BIGTEN/BIG12 40%
BIGEAST 35%
NOTRE DAME 33%

they wont

i dont see them paying what those 2 bowls are paying but thats because most years it will be 3rd place sec/big10/big12

some programs require all offensive linemen to wear knee braces.

Yep. They are worn as a preventative measure.

They had knee braces back then? Did they clash with the leather helmets? ;)
