Hello, is anyone in charge at SU Athletics? Has Dr Gross already checked out and onto his next job? Where's the advertising & promotion? What's our Football OCC schedule for 2014-2017? Seems like SU Athletics is asleep at the wheel - or in hibernation to you outdoorsy folks.

As I said in another thread, my new company may be dropping its (wow major $$$ hard to believe) advertising in the Dome due to "lack of attendance"! Advertising needs eyeballs - where are the eyeballs?

Like I said before, some of my workmates didn't know we had a home game this weekend and already made plans to do something else - this is what casual fans do.

As much as we blame the community for not showing up, it's not the communities job to promote SU Athletics & it's football program! That's SU Athletics job - and it needs overhauled starting with a high kick to the Nose!

I discussed this with my wife yesterday. Neither of us remember seeing or hearing any advertising leading up to the Tulane.

Great points and does anyone know the name(s) of the football marketing people? Maybe if fans start badgering them about What they are doing, some increased activity might begin in NY State.
I am an ex-player working for a global brewing giant in sales/marketing and I know what it takes to promote/market Orange Football and get fannies in the Dome.
Dr. Gross...Can you hear me?

It's freaking Tulane. Named after a Chuck Berry song.

We never have and never will get turn out for non-name opponents.

Onondaga county alone has over 10,000 registered businesses doing business here. Approximately 700,000 people live within 1 hour drive not counting Utica which adds another couple hundred thousands. Home prices have been increasing steadily since the 90's. People can afford to come to the games!

That is not accurate at all. During Coach McPherson's years (once they started winning) there were good crowds. Maybe not sell-outs but 35,000 to 40,000. A bad product for so long discourages the casual fan from attending. Win and they will come. Again. Might be too long ago to remember unfortunately.

I can't help but agree. Here in NJ there are Rutgers billboards everywhere, and they seem to do a lot of other advertising in other media as well. I recall posting about a month ago this similar point: I drive to Syracuse for business quite a bit and in the month leading up to the season opener I saw just ONE single billboard promoting the upcoming season, and that billboard is effectively at the entrance to the Carrier Dome on I-81.

SU Athletics is asleep at the wheel and needs to wake up.

I dont live in Syracuse so I cant attest to the marketing although judging by what people say here they are very much missing the mark. However, winning will cure it all. How can you get mad at the casual fan not going to a 12:30 Tulane game after the team looked soooooo bad week 1 and 2. Blame the staff for not starting our best Quarterback to start the season. Blame the decade of awfulness until Marrone turned us around but remember only people who religiously follow the program think Marrone "turned it around", to the casual fan we were "ok" and went to two lowly Pinstripe Bowls.

Bottom line for SU is they need quality Non-Conf Competition, and likewise for the schools we play. The problem we had this year was we lost the first two games, and schools like Michigan don't want to jump on a multi game deal if we tank. These last few games have opened some eyes, I don't care who the completion is. With the new playoff system fast approaching, you have to top level OOC games on your resume, and if SU is going to shore up its schedule, they need to show this year that Coach SS is not only here to stay, but the program belongs in the ACC. Don't forget, the ACC has its own problems of being a top tier conference. They haven't been much better than the Big East this last decade. As for scheduling games, SU needs to play their games at home, IMO. Not at Giants stadium. Had we played PSU at home, it would have been close to a sell out and we may have had a win on our hands rather than a loss. Momentum for fans is just as important as it is for the football program. I live 450 miles from the Dome, and people like me that travel back to SU are vital to filling seats. Wagner and Tulane just isn't going to do that, especially after the losses we had. So, in defense of our AD, his hands were tied when he lost DM, and now all rides on how the new regime is settling in, and how the ACC is doing. So far so good in the ACC. Now SU has do their part, on the field. The first ACC game will be nationally televised IMO, impressive wins for the program, first ACC game at the Dome, Clemson should be undefeated, media is so hoping a NE contender can rise in the CFB world, and the game has a half a dozen or so top recruits in the balance. This game is with out question one of the biggest games we have had to play in probably 2 decades. Not a good time for local businesses and residents to turn their back on the program.

It goes without saying that attendance is a HUGE issue. If I were in change, I'd hire someone in marketing to focus exclusively on audience/fan development. This person's job should be part community relations, part PR, part sales, part hype person. I'd also give this person WHATEVER he/she needs to be successful - access to JB and other high profile SU personalities, free tickets, budget for events and swag to give out.

The community needs to be told (yes, good marketing can create market demand ala Apple) why they should care about and support this team.

This absolutely should be a full-time job for the next three years and should be something that even Gross finds time to think about everyday.

I have a contrary view. I think it is the community that has kept attendance on life support and from total cardiac arrest. I think it is the almuni's lack of support that has led to life support for games like Tulane. The alumni needs to step it up. In addition, the lack of support from students who were able to get free tickets is what is appalling. P.S. I don't live in the Syracuse area. I am 2.5 hours away and go to the home games. I just don't see the alumni support that is needed.

Good points. I don't know if SU Athletics tries to work with the alumni clubs for tickets. Wouldn't be surprised if the figured all alums just come for Homecoming, but why not try and work with those clubs in the 300 mile radius of SU for other games.

I think people are right to say that SU needs to adapt and change their approach. For all of his "salesmanship", Gross has had zero impact on football tickets. Might be time to get some new people involved.

The biggest factor in attendance is winning. I know it's so simple that many hate hearing or reading it but it's true. If SU gets back to being a consistently winning program, the dome will be the place to be.

Speaking of billboards - in Syracuse on major highways it costs around $3,500 month to rent one for a whole month. ACC football money = $20 plus million or more - one billboard for 1 month $3,500...hmmm.

I think they are missing the local market. That market is A bay to Binghamton buff to Albany. They have done a good job in NYC but just like the poster who mentioned busses they have to create ways to breath new life into dormit fans as well as create new fans locally. True game day experience!

What's better than going to the game grilling, drinking your favorite bev, and then heading to a well attended game that you win!

They shouldn't have to promote Syracuse football, this isn't an arena football game!!! If the community doesn't want to support the product, then why are we wasting our time? Let's just drop down to FCS where they are more use to crowds of 20k or less.

Also for the last time people, stop with this being a northern school and it's entertainment and not religion. When Rutgers can attract more fans to there spring game then we can to an actual game, I don't buy it. The Syracuse fan base is the problem, and it always has been.

My question is how much does the upstate NY media cover upcoming games? The State/Clemson game was hyped to the max here in NC. I'm not in the Triangle but this game was touted in the local media even in western NC. And for attendance the State stadium was packed but that was a rivalry game. Need to develop a good rivalry in the ACC.

And you would have thought that with the Cuse' first ACC season there would be boards everywhere...
In Chicago, NW has lots of "Chicago's B1G Team" boards on most major highways and several in downstate Chicago.
Come on Dr. Gross...Step it Up!!!

They have that huge billboard that says "NY's Team" just outside of the dome off rt 81, why not simply put the schedule on there as well or at least...the home games?
