I freely admit that he likely would not have been initially considered nor interviewed if not for his history with SU. I have heard Gerry speak and I think that it is quite possible, in fact likely, that he blew the doors off during his interview. He knows the good, bad, and ugly at SU and he may well have come in with a vision and a gameplan to achieve that vision. And it may also have been impressive enough to separate the metaphorical financial panties from the donors.

I hired a lot of managers in my career. Often, the candidates would simply point to their resumes and track records. That is fine, but the ones who always impressed me were the ones who also did their homework on the position and came in with a vision and plan for success. It would not surprise me that Gerry did the same.

Let’s not forget that Fran Brown was basically a journeyman position coach with a reputation for being a great recruiter. There were likely any number of candidates with more experience as a head coach or coordinator. And yet Fran blew AW away during his interview and convinced him that he was the man.

I would not be surprised if Gerry did the same thing.
