It's Official: NBA Cancels First two Weeks of Rugular Season

They can just add on 2 weeks at the end of the season. That's what stern will do. No biggy

Don't really care about the prima donnas.

Great news. That means there will be more college hoops on ESPN now instead of crappy NBA games. I hope they bag the entire season.

Wow. I thought I was the only one who couldn't stand the Association

With the NBA Less games = better season.
100 games is like watching one baseball game in may nobody cares.
They really need to knock it down to 40.

Thats maybe the single best thing that makes college basketball so great. EVERY game counts EVERY upset counts. Every game is a celebration or a meltdown.
Otherwise it turns into a what are you doing tonight rather then a diehard fans perspective.

If they wanted to add another 5-10 weeks to the NFL it wouldn't hurt them.

Actually the NCAA added 5 or 6 games to the regular season several years ago... season is just a tad too long now, if you ask me. Season used to start around T-giving, now it starts right after Halloween. In recent years that has been a godsend with the football futility, but in the long run, the significance of each game gets watered down.

Does anyone on here ragging on the NBA actually watch the NBA? If so, I would be amazed that you would be so dismissive of what is happening.

The league is at one of its highest peaks of talent. It makes the college game look like a JV scrimmage.

Definitely true, but it sometimes seems that in order to be a college hoops fan you need to rag on the NBA.

exactly ... it's like being a futbol fan and saying the premier league blows.

having said that, i wouldn't be brokenhearted if the nba season's shortened this year. i'm starting to sense a repeat of something like '98-'99, when the spurs won the championship following a 50-game regular season.

Exactly. I love it. If there's no NBA, perhaps SportsCenter will actually air highlights of the top-25 college basketball games from the previous night.

On second thought, they'll probably just expand the Budweiser Fantasy NFL bulls--- segment. But at least there'll be one fewer thing for them to hype while ignoring scores and highlights of actual sporting events.

I won't argue that the level of play is much higher, but I don't have a dog in the fight, I don't enjoy watching the regular season games (whose atmosphere on television often comes across like the Syracuse-Tulane game), and I hate ESPN beating us over the head with tangential NBA-related "news" while ignoring actual college basketball highlights (yeah, that's more a criticism of ESPN than the NBA).

Spot on. the NBA has hit its ceiling it needs to learn to make every game count.

If they need the money that bad then have 2 35 game seasons. Also shorten the playoffs to 3 and 5 game series(which they would have to anyway) and fighting for home advantage will mean much more.

Just tired of the BS work stoppages and inconsiderate treatment of the fans. I was a huge NBA fan when we had a franchise, loved Magic/Bryd, followed Melo but can live without it while the money mongers mesh it out.

I don't read him too much these days, but Bill Simmons has a solution that I think would be very interesting In his words: "Shorten the regular season by four games, guarantee the top six seeds in each conference, then have a double-elimination tourney for the seventh and eighth seeds between the remaining 15 teams. I suggest this for five reasons. First, it would be entertaining as hell. In fact, that's what we'll call it: the Entertaining-as-Hell Tournament. Second, I'm pretty sure we could get it sponsored. Third, the top 12 teams get a reward: two weeks of rest while the tournament plays out. Fourth, a Cinderella squad could pull off some upsets, grab an eighth seed and win fans along the way. And fifth, with the Entertaining-as-Hell Tournament giving everyone a chance, no team could tank down the stretch without insulting paying customers beyond repair."

I'd watch. It would be pretty good for the league, I think.

That, and eliminating half a dozen teams in places like New Orleans and Atlanta.

I think the regular season may be a little too long, but I wouldn't recommend going any shorter than say, 75 games. And I don't think they should shorten the playoff series.

60 games would be perfect. And I agree, don't shorten the playoffs.

I like watching the NBA in passing, I watch probably 50 knicks games a year while doing something else, like a reading a book, playing with my kids or surfing the web. I will tell you this, my wife hates the NBA especially the Knicks with a passion.. :) I can't get into it that much even before Melo. It's like being a baseball fan, I watch a lot of baseball, mostly the Cubbies but at this point, I can't watch 9 innings without doing anything else... Try watching a Cubs day game at this point-- not very convenient anyday of the week

I hated that year. Half the league was out of shape. It was the first post MJ season and the league lacked the depth of star power that it has now.

Not saying that 82 games is perfect, but the partial season was terrible.
