... that throughout the constant expansion and reallignment nonsense, whether it's 2012 and 2011, or 2004 and 2003, Syracuse conducts itself with complete professionalism and class.

From Jake and DG, to Buzz and Nancy, and everyone on the BOT, if nothing else this school knows what to say, and, more importantly when to shut the hell up.

I, for one, appreciate it.

Well said. I've thought the same thing many times (sadly, I have had the opportunity to think the same thing many times), but you said it better than I could have.

Joyce must have a lot of ears on the BOT.

There were somethings said about and to BC in 2003 that didn't seem to meet that high standard.

And who will forget "Get a Life"?

Please find those quotes from Jake or Buzz re: BC. I don't recall any of them.

The other comment is totally irrelevant to my point, but you know that.

Well ... someone did have some choice words with Father Leahy. Not mentioning any names. ;)

"We had a double agent among us."
-- Syracuse chancellor Kenneth Shaw on Boston College's involvement in the Big East's restructuring discussions (The Daily Orange, SU student newspaper, Oct. 17, 2003)

The accusation here is that BC's Leahy was sharing internal Big East information with the ACC and/or that he was purposely working to impede or damage the working of the Big East committee... as that is what "Double Agents" do.

It's my understanding that Leahy maintained throughout that BC was not interested in a 16 team conference and the meeting minutes make that clear. What he might be accused of was lack of a total commitment to the Big East because there were only certain group strategies that he was prepared to support. That's hardly being a "double agent".

Of course Shaw's "Get a Life" quote was unrelated. But it shows that Buzz had a propensity to speak when the wiser course would have been to shut up.

He only said that because he was trying to get a book and movie deal. As I understand it, Tom Cruise was to play KS.

Wow. How horrible.

I'm not saying that it was the crime of the century or even a huge mistake. But it certainly doesn't reinforce Scoo0ch's claim about SU brass knowing when to shut up.

SU has been smart through most of this. They have done the best they could with the cards they had. They did not join the UConn-led lawsuit, which was smart then and which has proven to be smart later. It appears they have maintained cordial relationships with most of the parties as our FB series with BC as our FB series with them indicates.

100% agree with this.

Class is relative but how classy is it to let the news of your intention to leave the BE be made to the conference by a news report. Methinks class is viewed through orange goggles.

Well, on the surface this doesn't look like our finest hour. But, who knows the details on how this happened.

Was SU asked specifically to say nothing and to allow the ACC to make the announcement?

Was there a complete lack of personal relationship and/or communication between SU and the Big East leadership?

Were SU people reluctant to get into a messy and emotional discussion with Big East officials about a decision they had already made and had no intention of reversing

Or was it just poorly handled?

Well Syracuse has acted with total class throughout. Let's see, they got a wink and a nod invite to the ACC, got the rug pulled out from them by a fellow Big East member and then proceeded to NOT join the lawsuit by Blumenthal and kept their mouth shut with any public proclamations about getting royally screwed.

What Shaw said about BC was true. They came to the Big East meetings with one foot out the door. Not saying right or wrong but they were, in hindsight, a double agent to a degree.

Fast forward to last year. NO ONE saw the invitation to the ACC coming. No leaks until the 11.5th hour and no groveling by anyone to get that invite before that Saturday announcement.

I'm proud to be a Syracuse alum for how they handle this stuff. We look like, wait for it, A UNIVERSITY vs an athletic dept that also provides access to classrooms.

OK, that's fair, I never saw that.

I will amend my prior statement to read that 99.5% of the time we have acted with class and professionalism. Better?

Explain to me how one can be a "double agent to a degree". You are either one or you aren't. Shaw's accusation was inaccurate and therefore untrue. Just because you don't like what someone did, doesn't give you a license to label them as something they aren't.

And SU got a lot more than a "nod and a wink" from the ACC. An ACC delegation toured the SU facilities as part of the invitation process.

Right, because the last time we went through this we were completely transparent, to the point of doing a public site visit, which allowed the Governor of Virginia to block our admission.

In this case I stand 100% by what I said. We didn't have someone in the AD leaking stuff to mouthpiece blogs, we didn't have a BOT member bitching about the BE contract to a reporter... we just made a deal and let the ACC announce it. I'm completely fine with that.

Yup.

i think we're saying the same thing with the wink and nod. My point was we were invited and the dog and pony show was all that was left before it became official. And because it was so out in the open, VA Legislature got in there and took the invite from under us.

regarding BC, i'm a BC fan by birthright but they didn't exactly operate transparently when they didn't get the initial invite with UM and Tech. I have no problem with what Shaw said and knowing Shaw, he prob even said what he said in jest. Christ, they decided to immediately set up their football matchup with no bad blood btw the schools. That shows there was class and respect btw the teams even though one school got an invite at the expense of the other (there was only one more invitation to be had).

I am like Scooch, the school has handled these changes with class, dignity and aplomb. Credit Jake, credit Buzz, credit Gross or Cantor..total institutional class all the way around. I mean even with the Bernie Fine situation, the school has handled tough situations as well as they could. Orange colored glasses maybe, but it is what it is from my vantage point.

I'll concede that they have been better than most. But a few people missed the mark at times.
