No, he's not some savior. But he could add EMERGENCY depth in the post, potentially, if he decides to walk on once football season is over. Mike Hopkins has apparently told him in the past he's welcome to join the team whenever he wants. Larry Brown offered him a scholarship to play basketball at SMU. Played at Neumann-Goretti. 6-6, 230, and athletic. There could be worse walk ons when we're so thin down low, right?

(For the basketball only people, he's a wide receiver for our football team)

Honestly, I might feel better about him on the court than Chino.

Unless Shafer's willing to let him join the hoops team in October, I don't think he'd be more than a practice body. Time for Hop and Autry to join the rowing coaches and stand on the Quad the first week and pull any tall kid aside to talk.

Obviously, he won't be available until the second season. But hey, we've made those exceptions for walk ons before with football players, and I'd rather have the extra body in ACC play than non-conference anyway.

I hear we are in tight with a 7'4" Chinese kid whose sister attends SU.

Understand, but by the time he's in hoops shape, he'll be heading back to football for Spring ball. I don't think Boeheim's really looking for a part-time player based on his comments about McNabb in his book.

Football's schedule doesn't seem to allow for much double-duty like it did 10 years ago.

I know it's not ideal. I'm also just thinking, though, that desperate times...

I'm sure he'd be a great practice body, and probably insurance in case we lose a couple players to injury. But he's definitely not a center, and he's not playing ahead of Lydon, Roberson, G, or even probably Richardson at the forward spots. Is he even a forward though? His highlights make him look more like a wing to me and we've got plenty of those.

He was a power forward in HS. And again - to reiterate the very first thing I said - he's not a savior. But he's added depth. Imagine if Roberson has to play the 5 and Lydon is in foul trouble...does it actually hurt to have a guy who had a D1 offer as the first walk on we can turn to in a pinch?

McNabb did play center that one time...

Neon Bedaux and Ricky Roe both have eligibility remaining.

Not me.

I watched a neumann-goretti basketball game on one of the ESPN channels, just to see Jamal Custis after he'd committed to us.

Obviously, at 6-6 230 he's a physical specimen. But the best way I can sum up the game was that I didn't really notice him. N-G had another 6-6 guy who was the main cog inside, Custis didn't do much [he had a couple of inside buckets].

I have zero problem with him being added to provide depth, or even just to provide some physical play in practice for the other guys to work against. But anyone expecting him Julius Peppers is going to be disappointed.

And Jekelish, I get that wasn't what you were suggesting in your OP.

I also qualify this post by acknowleding that it was just one game I watched--maybe Custis just had an off-game. But based upon what I saw, he isn't a guy I'd envision playing.

If the contribution Custis makes is that our practices are more competitive that would be huge.

I guess this is my thing, too. There is literally no downside to him walking on. If he doesn't pan out as even a practice contributor, we've lost nothing. If he lives up to his HS billing as a possible D1 forward? Outstanding!

I'd rather see him play than Chinoso. Hell there is more BB footage of him on the court than there was of Chino. lol

Not to us fans, but there is certainly a downside for his football future for missing out on that conditioning, extra work with the QB's ,fild study while he's practicing with hoops. With the earlier spring practice schedule, I'm not sure it's worth exploring because he'd be leaving hoops for spring ball in February.

BB would be better off finding a couple of the better players at Flanagan who could at least practice the entire season.

Otis Hill wasn't much bigger. he was listed at 6-8 but was closer to 6-6. If you can play, you can play.

Well not nothing, how many stories do you hear about kids (particularly FB players) who tear their ACLs in a pickup basketball game?

I mean it's minimal, but it's not a complete "no downside" situation.
