Jameis Winston should not be left alone

So says his father:
http://tracking.si.com/2014/05/12/f...ston-father-family-failed-him/?xid=nl_siextra

“He’s supposed to have somebody around him 24/7,” says Antonor Winston. “He a Heisman Trophy winner so (he’s) definitely not supposed to be by (himself).”

Don McPherson could have been left alone.
Another person who is trying to place blame on someone else. Just have your son take responsibility for himself. If he keeps it up it may result in dropping afew draft picks, which is a good chunk of change.

Yeah, that is quite dumb, in the context of Crabgate. He needs someone around him to keep him from shoplifting? That's a bit ridiculous.

That said, I would not be surprised at all if FSU Athletics was not prepared to deal with the situation of a guy like Winston. For a big time program, FSU is incredibly "small time" on certain things. Crabgate is on Winston himself, but they absolutely do need to be protecting him, including from himself, as much as possible, and not treating him like just another player, let alone student.

Don McPherson could certainly be left alone, and maybe just because he's a better guy. But it's also a horrible comparison, considering there is absolutely zero comparison to either the world McPherson lived in compared to today, nor the two actual players. At the same point in their life, McPherson had completed 11 passes. Winston has won a national title, the Heisman, and is a high profile baseball player. He also hadn't been publicly (falsely?)accused of a rape. Two different players, two different times. I have no problem believing that Don McPherson didn't shoplift anything when he was 20. But if he had, nobody would know about it, and more importantly nobody would care.

Winston's is absolutely responsible for the incident. But the next time it could be a risk from someone else, and FSU would be just as much nowhere to be seen. The guy has a matter of months, and then he's gone. He definitely should have handlers of some kind. It's the sad reality of the world.

Maybe if they allowed "student athletes" to be paid they could get their own handlers?

;)

If he's not careful he will have someone watching him 24/7. :D

Don McPherson? That comparison is an epic fail. Lame.

Why? He should have won the Heisman and he's not the type of guy that has to be watched 24/7 so that he doesn't steal anything. Whether he's as talented as Jameis Winston is not the point.

See Lou's point above. It's lame to cherry pick a former SU QB and act like their situations are comparable when it's apples to oranges.

That's only because he didn't win the Heisman, plus back then snacks weren't "free".

Michael Carter-Williams might be a good comp?

;)

No, don't bring up any Syracuse players who got into trouble... Compare him to a former Syracuse QB from a different era who happened to be a model citizen.

How about we compare him to Ernie Davis. I'm sure the vultures were circling for any mistep they could've used to discredit him from winning the Heisman but alas he was a upstanding person 100% of the time.

My point was that you could be a college football star and still behave yourself. I could have chosen a lot of comparisons and they all would have been relevant. There's nothing in Winston's "situation" that makes his actions OK and the behavior of others irrelevant.

It's two different issues really.

He shouldn't need someone to keep him from shoplifting. Absurd for anyone to imply it. Don McPherson or 99.5% of Syracuse (or FSU) players is a fine comparison.

He absolutely should have someone handling him however to keep him out of trouble he ISN'T the source of. Don McPherson is a terrible analogy in this case, both because the profile of the two players is nowhere near similar at 20 years old (and I love Don McPherson, but please), but more so it's an entirely different world out there.

This is the result of a society that has come to believe that adults up to the age of 26 are still children.
