We all have our moments when it comes to our hall of fame coach but wow is he amazing or what. Enjoy it while you can because JB is our Bear, our Osborne, dare i say our Wooden. The guy is simply amazing as a coach and i think that if TL stays another year combined with Chubaka and the incoming frosh we might just win it all next year.

I agree. On all counts.

As I said in a prior post, next year is the year. As long as it's not another Grant/Ennis situation, we are going to be really good next year I think.

Not that we can't be really good this year too of course. Two 5th year guards are going to win their fair share of games.

With all due respect, sir, there are no comparisons to John Wooden. I'm fine with the rest of the post.

Agreed. Having those two fifth year guys who have been through the wars is going to pay big dividends this year.

My signature hasn't been 2017 champs for nothing. We have us some really good ball players up on the Hill. I think if we had Thompson to our class of 16' and not lose any contributors unexpectedly the we very well could be a top 5-10 in the preseason and then have the ability to stay their all season.

Couldn't agree more, I hope Coyle talks him into staying until hes on deaths door, guy is unbelievable.

I'm all aboard the JB love fest!!! He's an absolutely terrific coach. Whoever decided to offer Lydon a scholarship is an absolute GENIUS!! TL is absolutely terrific!!! LGO!!!!

Yeah, there was a bit of that, but he knew what to do with his players when he got them.
He sure could recruit. He is the reason that there was a limit put on how many schollies you could give. The intramural league at UCLA had players that eventually became All-American. That would have made a lot of coaches a hell of a lot better. That part was totally within the NCAA guidelines back then.

A lot of the other stuff wasn't but then we now know so much about how the NCAA operates. UCLA was one of the first untouchables. It was good business to have them so successful so nothing they did would ever have been investigated. Can't turn a blind eye when you refuse to even look.

Yeah, and a 1st year guy who reminds our 5th year guy he has to shoot before the shot clock expires! I keed, I keed...

UCLA under Wooden cheated more than pretty much every other program in that era combined. You do know that right? He was more or less Coach K in the Olympics.

Wooden would lose half his wins if the NCAA was as watchful back then as they are now--lots of illegal booster doings.
FWIW those were the days of 32 team tournaments. Not saying he wasn't a very good coach, but Sam Walton was the annual leader in assists.

So if he was doing it when it wasn't expressly disallowed, why wasn't everyone else? I don't much like UCLA, but I've read Wooden's book on coaching and virtually everything in it still applies today.

I know what you're saying, Jordoo, and I don't dispute it. Gaylord Perry is still in the Baseball HOF, levels of enforcement notwithstanding of course. :) But at the end of the day, his coaching philosophy was above the rest by an order of magnitude. The man knew and understood more about coaching than any 20 of the rest put together.

..And check the talent he had to work with. With the rosters he had with Alcindor and Walton he should never have lost. Then you can slide Swen Nader in the year before Walton played. There wasn't parity in CBB then and he had an embarrassment of riches to coach. Great coach? Yep. But anyone would have won lots of titles with those teams.

wooden was a much much more likable coach then calipari wasn't he?
He left off paul harris but seems like a ok guy.

Calipari just drafts guys out of recruiting advantages out of what scouts and boosters hand him, and then tries to make a team out of it. He probably coaches them less then other guys on his staff officially and unofficially.
I imagine the Great Bobby Knight would have summed him up something to that effect.
I mean they handed himthree of the top four fresh pgs this year so they wouldn't play elsewhere. Disturbing. What they forgot was there is jr and seniors out there.

That is one reason why Coach K is so great oldschool, total Class like JB.
I look forward to Hopkins who is going to be alot like jb and also has a nice relationship with Coach K taking the reins in another lifetime :)
