Jesse Edwards and the 10-15 footer

If Jesse Edwards practices 500 mid range shots a day and implements a 15 foot shot in games he becomes the ultimate weapon for SU and opens up the offense to many options instead of the ISO mentality. Defenses would have to guard him opening up a lot floor space. He also will be a very rich NBA player..

Spot on Im stating the obvious but he has to put some weight on.

That would really open things up if we had someone on the team that was able to dribble drive to the basket.

I don't know. That unguarded 15 footer aka " free throw" hasn't been going for him lately.
50% fg is still good...free throws have een off for some reason lately but he makes a high percent of 2pointers

Jesse isn't as much of a beanpole as recent previous centers. He's got some good weight. He can't get too big though because then he couldnt get out to cover the corner 3.

May be in the minority here, but it's obvious to me Jesse still needs significant work to be a go-to post presence. Yes, he's far better than past options at C on the offensive end, but he clearly still lacks fluidity it takes to play out of the post on a consistent basis, and JB sees that. He's gotten significantly better every year, but he's still learning to play within himself.

Is he an upgrade? Yes. Does he still need another year before we can frequently target him as a prime offensive option? I believe so. I think not having a guard that can penetrate harms him far more than his own ability.

I mean, I agree with everything you say. I dont think he is developed enough to be the centerpiece of a top p5 level offense. He is often kinda late on footwork or just slow etc...even though he is also often there to make great plays as well. And I especially agree that he really suffers from not having a drive and dish type of point and just generally not having an offensive system that can get him the ball in good positions.

Hes not gonna score through a double team...or dribble drive etc...but Get him the ball in decent position and he usually finshes though.

And if you get him the ball some more in good position, he's just bound to get better. Hate seeing a big man work his literal butt off getting position only to not be rewarded for his efforts. A lot of energy wasted.

And that’s one of his few weaknesses. He doesn’t do a great job of presenting himself and sealing his man off. I suspect it’s mostly a strength thing. And just like his rebounding, he needs stronger hands so he doesn’t bobble a few passes. He’s taken a lot of steps toward, if he gets stronger between seasons he could become All ACC.

Agree ^^^^^^^^

Jesse needs to learn to finish before he goes to 10 ft. jumpers. He misses 2-3 bunnies every game. That alone would make him a far greater scoring threat.

Feed him more, but pray he can finish.

Right said, Fred.

Seriously, good post. I'm thinking that at least some of his lack of fluidity is due to a lack of strength and physicality, followed by a lack of experience. He is more skilled than he is able to demonstrate. The lack of a penetrating PG definitely compounds his issues. Not to beat a dead horse that's been beaten long past death, but KR's ability to break guys down off the dribble would have also made a huge difference for the spot up shooters on this roster. It's ironic that Buddy's game is also impacted.

Wild guess here - is your username a reference to the offense you ran?

I've seen that several times posted about Jesse adding weight. Is that a priority for his development with the coaching staff? Anyone have some insights?

Well, he’s shooting 70% on < 10 attempts / game.

IF he didn’t miss 2-3 shots a game, he’d be shooting 100%.

Maybe higher. ;)

But seriously - his actual stats are:
Makes / game: 4.4 #BRAND!!
Attempts / game: 6.1
= 72.2%

So, he’s only “missing” 1.7 shots / game.
Not 2-3 “bunnies”.

All that said - it’s absolutely criminal he’s not averaging like double that number of shots.

I mean, Jeremy McNeil’s Sr year, he “shot” 75% from the field, basically all dunks.
Jesse has a much more diverse game on O, so the fact that he’s still north of 70% is, frankly, remarkable.

Eh.

His FG percentage and the fact that he gets to the line as often as Buddy taking a 3rd of the shot attempts as Buddy are pretty compelling reasons to target him as a prime option now and see what happens.

Just a snap response. I’m going to go with the 10 to 15 footer one on one.

You’re wrong on this one. Jesse and the 10 to 15 footer. I go with the freakishly tall guy. It would be impossible to get a shot over him.
