So this is like in the real world, you get hired and show up to work for say IBM, but IBM does not pay your wages at all, you are getting checks from LUIGI PIZZA and MIAMI JEEP with a silent nod from IBM.  Your contracts with the pizza and jeep joints do not have any requirements regarding performances, or having to listen to coaches, or show up for practices or even games.  You could be collecting checks and say you can't practice or play because there is a zit on your face, and you are free to transfer out whenever.  Coaches no longer have control over the players except for playing time.  You can't even demand your players to show up in shape as you do not control the check book.

If the school writes the check you can have contracts with terms like conditioning and performances, but when this happen the question is whether these are still students or employees.  Note that this is only an issue with revenue generating sports, the other sports like badminton or curling or track & field they don't have this issue...
