The staff brought in two quarterbacks they believed would be solid options for the season. The rest of the QB room consisted of new players who were essentially projects. They arrived with no real depth, and frankly, we’re lucky to have gotten the quarterbacks we did. When option #1 gets hurt and option #2 turns into a major failure, you’re forced to try whatever you have. Not many programs can roll out three capable quarterbacks in today’s college football landscape. We’ll probably never know the full story of why Rickie couldn’t play in games, but it’s fair to assume the game was moving too fast for him, he seemed to freeze or lock up. Filardi and Carney were both thrown into the deep end very quickly, and it was clear the staff believed Filardi was the best option, while Carney simply wasn’t ready. I hope the staff has learned that you cannot have a roster with only one quarterback who has real game experience, followed by five players who just arrived on campus or only have a few garbage-time snaps. It will be interesting to see whether Syracuse brings in a dedicated QB coach and what kind of impact that could have. But the bigger issue is the portal: Syracuse needs to bring in two quarterbacks, one with legitimate game experience and another who also has proven tape and meaningful reps. Ultimately, yes, this falls on the staff and we already saw coaches shuffled or leave because of it. Did the staff fail to develop high school quarterbacks quickly enough? I don’t think so. Did they fail to develop Rickie fast enough? Maybe but he had time at LSU and here, so I think that responsibility leans more on him. Did Fran learn a lesson from this season? I hope so and only time will tell.
