RIP John. I really enjoyed his book "Tales from Q School" (mid 2000), which walked through the life of many a journeyman pro-golfers and their battle to earn tour cards at the old Qualifying School format. It was great to get to know some of these guys, as there lives are nowhere near as glamorous as the stars of the tour. Basically 200 guys would show up for a 6-day tournament, and about 30 of them would earn their PGA tour card for the next year. It was the ultimate pressure cooker. It's a bit less relevant now as they shortly there after moved to a format where tour cards were based on a full season on the Minor League Tour. But its still relevant as a way to learn about these borderline tour guys and the less than glamourous life they live.
