I didn’t have much knowledge of him before the hire but looking at his resume on paper would scream excellent hire to me.  He had smaller school experience before but just his power 4/NFL experience is pretty extensive:

2013-14 Texas Tech- Dline coach
2015- Jets quality control
2016- Jets assistant Dline coach
2017-18- Arkansas Dline coach
2019- South Carolina Dline coach
2020-21- Penn St Dline coach
2022- Penn state Dline coach/run game coordinator
2023- Detroit Lions Dline coach
2024-2025- Clemson volunteer

Normally we would clamor for someone who has had such vast experience in Big 12/SEC/Big 10/NFL and is still relatively young.  I get the concern about his short stays but it’s very clear that every move was a step up from previous job and Penn state even promoted to keep him.  With that being said, I wouldn’t expect him to stay for more than 2-3 years with his track record.  If he does get poached it’ll be because he has done a good job and that’s part of Fran’s sales pitch to his assistants.

Above someone questioned his recruiting but I have a hard time thinking someone would keep climbing the ladder the way he did without being an excellent recruiter at a position where most teams want an elite recruiter.  His recruiting history shows that he had pulled in a 5 star and multiple handfuls of 4 stars at his stops at PSU and S Carolina.  Sure it’s easier to attract that level of talent at those schools but he at least has a history with some recruiting success.
