VERMILLION – When the University of South Dakota football team takes the field for the season opener in September, it will be doing so without one of its biggest weapons.
According to a member of USD’s coaching staff, standout defensive lineman Andrew Van Ginkel is transferring from USD to Iowa Western Community College. Van Ginkel, who would have been a sophomore with USD this upcoming season, will play this fall for the Reivers and then look to transfer to an FBS school, another source said Monday.
Ginkel, and he is still listed on the tentative spring roster as of Monday afternoon.
Van Ginkel, the 6-foot-4, 230-pound native of Rock Valley, Iowa, emerged last season as a significant weapon for USD’s new-look 3-4 defense.
During the regular season, he led the Missouri Valley Football Conference in sacks (9) and tackles for loss (18), and also recovered three fumbles, forced two fumbles, blocked a kick and had two pass breakups.
Van Ginkel was later named the league’s Freshman of the Year and went on to finish third in the FCS Freshman of the Year voting.
Iowa Western, located in Council Bluffs, is a national junior college powerhouse. The Reivers, the 2012 national champs, went 10-2 last season and finished No. 3 in the National Junior College Athletic Association rankings. The program also routinely sends players to the FBS level.
