You know what? I can't do it. Rene handling kickoff return doesn't sound awesome at all. It sounds a lot less than awesome.

Can you fair catch a kickoff?

You've gotta be *cking kidding me at this point. I don't understand how people don't get that you can't return a punt if there's no blocking and the defenders are around you before you catch the ball. The kid's never had a chance, and you and KCSU have personal vendetta's against him. Let's see what he does before we belittle him.

Bnoro's right other then the horrendous USC return (that was all Rene's fault) this kid doesnt have a chance. The few times he tries to return a kick he either gets his head almost taken off or hit so hard he teleports back to the late 90's. If we could ever set up an actual return he might be able to do something. I dont care if we have Devin Hester and Jackie Joyner Kerses love child back there you cant gain yards when half the punt team is a yard away before you even catch the ball.

I'm convinced more now than ever that people don't actually watch these games/plays. They see the results and check the box scores later and just guess at what happened.

Even the one -6 yd return wasn't totally his fault. From my seat behind the USC punter, it looked like he crushed that punt and totally to the opposite side of the field from where Rene was set up. By the time he ran it down, he had a choice of letting it continue to bounce/roll, or pick it up and try to make something happen. Reversing field isn't usually a great decision unless your name is Deion Sanders or something, but I don't think it would have cost the team any less yards. Am I wrong?

There's no Joe Adams () on this roster. Great punt returners aren't exactly easy to find, and I don't feel like dozens of punt returners are going to the house every weekend across the country. We've been bad at blocking for our punt returners, and people would be far more upset if he got lit up and fumbled instead of fair catching.

Everyone is defending Rene on the punt returns and that is fine. So what is the problem? Why doesn't he get time? What should be done to correct it? It's not a 1 year thing.

Our special teams have been a mess and I don't claim to be a coach or to know the specifics as to how to make our team better at blocking on punt returns. I do know that Rene is a very good athlete with a decent amount of shifty-ness, and I am curious to see what he can do with the extra space afforded to him on a KR instead of a PR. I'd just rather give him a chance to bring one out of the end zone before we immediately condemn the move and slam Rene.

If we're lucky they'll kick it into the end zone and we'll take it on the 25.

With the new kickoff rules touchbacks are pretty common

'Uge over reaction. 'Uge.

I don't have a vendetta against this kid. I just don't think the idea of him returning kickoffs is exciting at all.

Some of you folks are pretty quick to assume the worst of some posters and the motivation behind their posts. Get over it.

I didn't slam Rene. I said the idea of him returning kickoffs wasn't exciting.

Now I've learned that's out of bounds. Every placement of any player on our depth chart excites me greatly now.

Let's bring GRob back.

I see what you did here. Good old fashioned reverse jinx so that the football gods let him break a big return to prove you wrong.

Nassib throwing 4+ TD's today doesn't sound awesome either.;)

Is it true that our last PR for a touchdown was Marcus Clayton in '03 against the 'neers? Man o man if true. We've played 8 seasons of football since then

he will only get one chance to return a kick if we are lucky.. and if they are like Maine he might not even get that chance.

Has a 'Marcus Clayton' ever played at Syracuse? Serious question. Just wondering if I'm starting to lose my memory at the old age of 29.

Last punt return for a TD that I can remember was Jamel Riddle against the Hokies.

I think it's a great idea to have Rene do kickoff returns. The last thing we need is a turnover or a costly error on a kickoff return against Stony Brook. Let our offense will move us down the field.

Also if he does look good returning, this could be the confidence booster Rene needs to get an attitude returning kicks.

And if he does bad? The staff can feel confident they need to go to plan B right away. If he can't make good returns versus Stony Brook than chances aren't good of him doing anything good against the rest of our competition.

I wonder if DM has ever seen him return a KO in practice before? Or if he is aware of what awesome looks like.
