I did with a close eye on our starting guards since Fl. State shot very well yesterday. On almost all occasions for 3 point shots we put up one hand to contest the shot, but we are so slow to react we might come within a yard of the shooter and rarely jump. The shooters had a clear uncontested shot. It wasn't that noticeable until I scrutinized it. Wow. And finally our guards consistently watch the flight of the ball flatfooted/frozen instead of getting ready for a rebound. Conversely, Florida State contended on about 75 per cent of SU's perimeter shots. This may be old news but really is an eye opener when you get the whole game look and not just a couple of shots. I might be ill informed - but has this been the way the entire season? Is that what we do with the 2-3 zone. Just let them fire away without fully contesting the shot? It seems if we really harass some of those shots it's the difference between the W and the L.

I blame Jesse.

I put this in my topic about Joe’s defense, I’m almost without words, it still makes no sense to me how the coach sees this and thinks it’s acceptable. Joe can score 25 and it doesn’t matter, he gives up that much by himself. Time stamps are threes literally with Joe right there to make a play.

Sorry I missed your topic earlier on this.

No need to be sorry, was buried in another post, just piggybacking on your post.
1st game I got to see I. Person this year. Absolutely amazing how slow we are on close outs. Both Joe and Buddy can not get there after a few passes get them moving. The other thing that I knew but was shocking to see was how slow Jimmy was in getting to the corner. Get his feet moving out to the opposing two guard or leaning. In to help inside and he simply can’t get to the corner. He tries but might be the slowest on the team (which is quite the feat)

Cuse

It’s been like this the past 3 seasons. We can’t stop penetration and guys are getting wide open shots. The close outs are pathetic for Rec basketball let alone D1 college basketball.
Too slow to close out in the zone. Not athletic enough to play man . Maybe we should just do what the Sacramento kings owner wanted to do and just cherry pick ..

Now you know why so many people were pissed when JB let Kadary walk out the door in favor of Joe.

Richmond had a foot out the door at the beginning of last season. He didn’t want to be here.

Our starting guards are both slow and lazy on defense. Probably because they know they “have to” be iron men.

It’s unacceptable.

FSU came into the game shooting 31% from 3 in last 2-3 games. Tells you everything

Here are Syracuse's peers defensively per KP. Adjusted for Schedule Stength.

Worst P5 defence. And the points the OP raises (guard play) are probably the biggest factor.

Worst defensive backcourt ever. With One forward who is also terrible at D and one other forward that is just regularly bad at D.

When you’re this bad, it’s got to be more than just a pair.

No matter, it’s scary how bad we are.

They all get sucked into the lane when the ball goes inside instead of flaring out to the shooters and having one of the wings hedging if an opponent puts a player in the short corner. Jimmy does this all the time, same with Joe. Our best defenses in the past flared out to shooters as a kind of matchup zone. If the ball goes into the middle, one of the guards can put pressure on the guy there but they need to quickly move back out to whoever the shooter is. Joe just isn’t quick enough or long enough.

You don’t know what you’re talking about at all when it comes to this topic.

All these wide open uncontested perimeter shots is what happens when you have 2 slow footed guards AND 2 more slow footed forwards all out there at the same time. They can't cover the ground quickly enough. Never seen anything like this during the JB era. Last year we had the same two slow footed starting guards but Richmond would come in for half the game to replace Joe and we had two much quicker forwards.

Surprised to see SIU Edwardsville on that list. Mainly because I never knew there was such a team. How far we’ve fallen.
Across the river from St. Louis. They haven’t been D1 for very long.
