Advanced stats suggest he is the best player on the team.

He's first in PER. First in TS% amongst players who have played in all 9 games. Tied for first in WS. First (by far) in WS/40. First in BPM.

The only area where I assume he's last is "front end of 1 and 1s in the final minute of a ball game."

A question. I am not a big stats guy, but is a correct interpretation of the collective individual player's PER vs. the team's record and performance to date that, as my eyes tell me, the team is not playing any real defense or is that me putting a square peg in a round hole?

I don't believe there is any direct connection with individual PER and overall team performance.

We are 253rd nationally in defensive efficiency and 333rd in opponent PPG so team defense is certainly a problem.

a big who doesn't take many shots outside of dunks and put backs is going to look good in the advanced measures that rely on the counting stats. they do almost nothing negative that shows up in the box score. check maliq's numbers from last year, they are very similar.

Malik was so much better as a freshman and it's not even close. He could guard 1 thru 5 anyone who says he's overrated it drinking too much Orange Kool aid.

wasnt arguing that, simply that their advanced stats look similar because they have a high positive/low negative role in counting stats

He’s a top three player on the team. That’s far from a good thing, but he’s a solid contributor.

That dude had zero post game. His entire armament of scoring was dunks and layups .

Maliq is active with his hands.

According to Evan Miya…
Jyareis great on offense - as noted above, he doesn’t take shots he can’t make - but is TERRIBLE on defense (second worst on the team).
Maliq was better on both… and is a monster this year.
Computer stat speaking.

I know he's only played 33 minutes all year, but look at Cuffe's TS%, almost 66%. By far the best of any guard on the team.

Jyare has been a bit of a conundrum to watch. He's had stretches where he has looked dominant in the post on offense and able to score almost at will. He'll then disappear for awhile or float outside for a long 2 or 3 point attempt. I made the same comment in another thread, but it seems to me like we could run some offense through Jyare or Donnie in the post for easy looks. Either they make their post move or give them a couple options by design to pass to if they are doubled or getting stopped.

He's had some impressive rebounds as well where he'll sky above everyone.

Defense is another story, but that's the entire team.

Brown could guard a 1? Who is drinking Kool aid? And he got eaten alive by 5's that could play down low. Fortunately, there aren't many of those anymore. So he can play the small ball 5 and do quite well. He was a very good defender but let's keep it real.

Both things can be true simultaneously. He was a gifted defender, as evidenced by the number of steals / deflections. He was also a pretty good rebounder for a player his size, given that he had good instincts and positioned himself well. After all, he was all conference defense for a reason.

But in hitch-up-his-shorts 1-on-1 defense against true centers -- like Bacot from UNC and the two big kids from Clemson -- he was undersized and struggled.

Both true simultaneously.

RF, I think that is what I said. He is very good against non elite low post scorers. But against 5's with low post game, it was a real struggle for him. One of the reasons that he left here was that he didn't want to play small ball 5. And one of the things that frustrate Red and I know this for a fact, is that is how he is being used at Duke. But the idea that as, the post that I responded to said, that he could guard a 1. Not a chance.

He certainly has been the most consistent. He belongs in the starting 5.

False. He shot 50% from three point range last year.
he’s shot all of 24 threes in 70 games
He’s made 8-24.
Last year he made 7-19.
It’s a meaningless sample.
I’m referring to Brown btw

...and CJ Fair couldn't score outside of 10 feet, at least according to one poster who insisted that for TWO YEARS, before CJ shot nearly 50% from three his junior season.

There's a difference between "doesn't" and "can't." And within the sample size, Maliq shot the bell well from range. That can't be disputed. It isn't "meaningless," and in fact debunks the narrative that all he could do was score point blank at the rim, with no other discernible offensive skill. BS.

Admit I got the data wrong with the percentages, however.

This is how I see it as well. Jyare is differential to both Freman and Lampkin, which is fine, but because of that, he doesn't always get to occupy the space he wants to on the court. I think we can define his role a bit better and make him even more of an impact player, but these things take time. Lampkin knows exactly who he is and where he needs to be but Freman is still figuring that part of his game out. As Freeman grows into himself and becomes a star player, I actually think that will help Jyare figure his role out and make more of a consistent impact.
