K vs JB and the march for all time records

I was curious when Coach K got so far ahead of JB, and if he was always ahead. I made a spreadsheet, but couldn't figure out how to post it.

What was interesting (to me at least) was that JB started a year later and very quickly got very far ahead of K very quickly. Then on the cusp of JB's heyday, K started a slow and steady climb, with one hiccup, before he pulled way ahead.

K's younger, had a head start, and had an arguable easier road. But man, what a record. Really wish JB had a shot at topping it.

The difference between K and JB is extremely simple:

Since 1980 JB has 42 NCAA tourney wins while K has 81 tourney wins.

81-42= 39

918-878 = 40

I don't have my spreadsheet in front of me, but JB was up by about 48 wins in 1980. And he did not start losing ground until Syracuse's hay day in 1987. Even with your logic, there is still about a 50 wins difference for K.

I'm not sure I understand your latest post, so I did a spreadsheet so I could see the data myself.

I examined the differential between K and JB, including all wins and adjusting for NCAA wins. JB had a decent lead over K for the vast majority of their careers. In 2001 K finally overtook JB in wins, but if you adjusted for NCAA wins, JB would have still led by 19.

K has steadily increased his win margin over JB during the last decade, but he didn't overtake JB in adjusted wins (total wins - NCAA wins) until 2008.

If you adjust for NCAA wins, K only leads JB by 5 right now. I'm not sure where your 50 number came about.
