On this general topic (SU's seeding), I need to vent. This year's successful run has been fun to watch. If we keep winning we have the potential to get a #1 seed. The team has unusual depth and veteren/talented guards. We have a lethal transition game. We're big inside (with Fab), and when we're motivated we play great defense. Then came the last 3 games. Melo's absence at ND made our half court look average, at best. Lack of inside scoring, bulk and experience remain huge problems (Rak has not arrived and Keita has legs like twigs and hands like granite). Our 3pt shooting is down to 34%. Although we looked good at Cinci, we came home after 5 days rest and laid an egg (4-20 3pt). We allowed WVU to shoot nearly 41% from the field and let them ride us like circus ponies on the boards -- a team that is no where near the size of UNC or Kentucky. Some of our problems will improve when Melo returns. We should also allow for the inevitable letdown at the midpoint of a long season. All that said, right now, IMHO we're not playing well enough to beat any of the top 8 teams in the country, including Duke. This week in practice, I'm sure the staff will work like crazy on half court sets and boxouts. They'll need to, because this weekend (regardless of its past record), St. John's is going to come out ON FIRE. They spanked the same WVU team that we struggled against in the Dome. They overcame a 20 point deficit at Cameron Indoor, closing the final margain to 7, and are unlikely to be intimidated against another top 10 team. Not to mention that Mo Harkless is just plain unstoppable. Therefore, if we walze into the Garden like we're entitled to win and start missing open shots and allowing transition baskets, we'll not only loose the game but also our top seed. Confidence will then take a plunge; and it'll be difficult to recover in time for the toughest stretch of the season. More losses could follow at the Dumb-Dumb center and in Storrs. Bottom line: we need Fab back. And we need to play up to our ranking before we start criticizing other team's tourney chances.
