Kinda OT: 60 Minutes on college football

60 Minutes had a piece on major college football, focusing on Michigan and Alabama, which was actually pretty damn interesting. If you can find the video I recommend it. They basically came right out and said that Michigan football funds the entire athletics department, and brings in 60-70% of the University's development goal every year (if I heard their AD correctly).

Can someone point to when the change was made that Athletic departments were self funded? i know its the goal now but 50 years ago did it happen?
