You know, my honest reaction to this is that if we are not his "dream school," and he has a "dream school" that he wants to talk about, then by all means go elsewhere. If you come on board you have to be 100% in, not peeved and always wondering what might have been if only your "dream school" had offered.

Money has been saying that Smith wanted to play in a spread offense. Oregon pretty much defines spread offense.

I don't share that opinion. If we're fortunate enought to land a prospect with elite speed like Smith, I wouldn't care what his "dream school" was.

We need players like Laray Smith. We need playmakers.

By all means, if he ends up at SU and his mind is right about it, it's great news. I just don't want someone who thinks he had to "settle" and keeps wishing things had turned out differently. I would love to hear what Marrone has to say to him about why a school is one's "dream school."

This isn't directed at you javadoc, more of a general statement about recruiting, but I never get the jilted sentiment some attribute to what high school kids have to say. If he ends up here, great--hopefully he emerges as a playmaker. If he ends up elsewhere, it wasn't in the cards and no use crying over spilt milk. But sometimes, when kids express interest in other programs, people on this forum want to drop them, rescind scholarship offers, etc. just because they aren't 100% enthusiastic about Syracuse. I just don't get that--especially when they have options. When I was in the same position before my senior year of high school, I was indecisive about where I wanted to go for college. How is that any different for these kids, even if they're athletes?

Won't remotely bother me if he eventually "settles" on Syracuse when the dust settles. If he is as fast as they say, sign him up.

I know what you are saying - I was also indecisive about where I wanted to go to college, or if I even wanted to go at all. That is different than having a "dream school" which you single out and talk about. I would want to know why a school is a dream school. If it is for irrelevant or downright immature reasons, then you either have to educate the kid about what he should really be interested in, or hope that you get lucky and the dream doesn't pan out.

I'm only saying all this because of the "dream school" angle. Of course we are not going to be the #1 choice of many prospects, and that is fine. The "dream school" angle makes it a difference of kind, not of degree, IMO.

Y'all are just focusing on FB with Laray. The kid is a runner. If you played FB and also ran Track and Field, like Laray, Oregon would be a "Dream School" if you thought you could dual sport. At least that's my take..either that or I have been watching way too much tier 3 sports.

I'm pretty sure that SU wasn't Coach Marrone's "dream school" when the whole process started either, but after doing a thorough analysis of all the programs, distance from home and family, academics, etc, etc he was able to determine that at the end of the day Syracuse was the best place for him. If you're a speed/offense type kid the past few years and watching big games & sportscenter highlights on TV - why wouldn't Oregon be your "dream school"? doesn't mean at the end of the day that's where you end up playing though. SU's roster is full of kids that didn't necessarily think SU was their dream school - may have been tOSU, FLA, ALA, UGA, etc - but they ended up at Syracuse and love it there.

Alot of kids criteria for their "dream school" can change in a years time. Oregon has big time facilities and has been a nationally recognized team the last few years so it's easy to see why kids would be attracted to that.

If we run a more exciting offense this year and win more games we could become more appealing. Having NYC guys on the team and our own facilities upgrades in the works couldn't hurt things either.

He could end up committing to SU with a statement of "I've always had a great relationship with the coaching staff and after seeing the progress this year the program really grew on me."

Appears he visited this weekend but there is some rumblings the visit didnt go well which I belive Garcia is trying to confirm over at Scout.

hey will get that offer out to him as soon as they wake up from their coma.:bang:

Yes SU.

I just saw this on Twitter. Did it have anything to do with this...

NCAA Recruiting Calendar says visits are allowed up to July 5th. NCAA Manual says no visits in July. How does that make sense?

Think that is mainly based on over analyzation of his facebook acct. Too much stock being put into a 17 yr old saying he's mad and struggles are motivating him on facebook on the sunday after he visited on fri and sat maybe. Could mean just about anything so can't really get too caught up in that.

It will be good to hear from him though and see how it went.

That doesn't make any sense. Maybe that is for official visits for seniors that are starting in fall and still haven't decided or late bloomers who are filling up open spots. Families and kids are on vacations in July and that's one of best times for kids to make visits. I also thought that a recruit can go on campus for unofficial visit anytime they wanted since it's on their dime. Tyree Harris just said he is visiting sometime later in July (and Ogundeko if he hasn't already) so this doesn't fit either.

I have no inside info on Laray's situation. However, I have been told that the staff has been very straight forward to recruits about where they stand with recruiting, both rank on the board as well as position requirements.

If the rumor of Laray being upset is true, I would venture to guess that he has been informed that there are others in front of him on the board, and that he is not being recruited as a running back - a position he wants to play but is not best suited for here. He will most likely play S or slot receiver.

NYPost tweet..

Xaverian running back Laray Smith did not visit Syracuse over the weekend, according to a source. May go sometime this week.

Hard for a visit not to go well when you don't actually visit, lol.

LOL - for a team that desperately needs playmakers - they'd better not be trying to recruit this kid as a freakin safety

I would imagine this is spot on. I dont put a lot of stock into Laray being very upset or anything like that but if it is true I would think the reasons you outlined would be the cause.

Very odd, Garica usually has good info. Would be suprised to hear he was wrong about the kid visiting and the post visit rumblings.
