SANTA ROSA BEACH — Connor Rooney’s junior season mirrored South Walton’s resurgence; steady, physical and increasingly hard to ignore.

The Seahawks linebacker emerged as the anchor of South Walton’s defense in 2025, piling up more than 100 tackles, making game-changing plays on special teams and helping lead the program to a 7-3 record and a second-round playoff appearance.

Along the way, Rooney’s effort in 2025 caught the attention of Mid Bay News readers, as he earned more than 47% of the vote to be named Defensive Player of the Year, capping a season that marked a major leap from his earlier role as a rotational player.

Rooney’s production was consistent week to week, but several moments stood out. He contributed heavily on special teams, blocking punts and field goals, and delivered standout performances against rivals, including Freeport, which South Walton defeated twice in the same season.

Quite a Liverpudlian name, hope he commits!

6'2 4.6 100+ tackles... yeah that works at LB. Has to be exciting to think about playing LB at Syracuse under the current coaches and play with most of the existing group of players.

He's from nowhere Florida (pan handle aka South Alabama) for those wondering why a "Florida kid" has such a short offer list. Wonder if he's military kid as well as that part of the world is just bases surrounded by swamps and beaches.

Nowhere Florida are you serious? I live in this area and it has produced NFL quality talent. The Leggettes and Michael Carter most recently. He is literally 1.5 hours outside of Pensacola which has produced a ton of talent including Emmett Smith. Pretty sure we offered a kid from Navarre which puts out D1 level talent and is essentially right next door.

I love the Florida Panhandle. Destin FTW.

Destin is great! Hell we pulled Preston Shumpert out of Fort Walton Beach. Niceville is one town over from this kid and we offered a LB there that is a national level recruit. We have had offers out to kids in Freeport (including Julius Miles) which is also right in that area. Quite a bit of talent in this area ... from Pensacola to Tallahassee you'll find quite a bit of talent ... it dies east of Tallahassee for the most part until you get to Jacksonville ... the portion of Florida directly south of Georgia is truly nowhere Florida and merely the place folks drive through to get to Orlando.

Not a shot at the area in the slightest. It's the part of Florida I'd choose to live given the choice... well maybe that or one of the non West Keys but that's different world. LOVE the National Naval Aviation Museum, went to Ice Flyers game, found a dope vinyl store (revolver?), went to McGuire's, etc. It's an extremely cool area, just not what most think of when you say Florida similar to how most don't think Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, etc when they hear New York.

Moreso was pointing out why offer lists might not look as gaudy as Miami NW and other South Florida kids for those that will see "Florida" and the offer list and inevitably whine.

Fair enough … Niceville is right next door and they have a LB we offered Noah Renes who has 35 other offers like Oklahoma, Ole Miss, etc … typically Miami and UF don’t go hog wild here because it’s FSUs backyard.
