LB Malik Matthew in the portal

Hate to loose a ny player. He would only be a red shirt freshman this coming year. Maybe got beat out for the two deep and did not want to wait.
Yeah. Very early in career. Maybe recruited over already, maybe couldn't put on weight?

On to the next one

I agree that he might of had "the talk" with HCDB ... LB's in this defense need to be #225+ to be effective and it takes years to put on good weight ...at #210 maybe Malik didn't want to wait.

Maybe Malik made the decision after talks with the coaching staff, because otherwise it is just odd that players would make these decisions after the May 1 deadline

couldn't possibly begin to speculate but it could be grade issues just the same.

From a depth chart perspective he's the lightest LB and the room is young but just based on the numbers it's surprising to me the depth chart is any reason to bail.

Wax and Thompson are starters for 3 more years barring injury. Jones hits the draft

Sparrow, Roon and McDonald look to have promising futures.

Mekhi Mason I've heard has been pretty good and will make a move up the depth chart.

good luck to him best to move on now if he doesn't like his situation. Frees up another spot for a DL
Exactly. Find someone that can contribute ASAP staff.

That was the old rule. The new rule applies to all Division 1 schools, so if a player enters the portal after May 1 and transfers to any Division 1 school they have to sit a year.

I don't like to see any player leave, but I get it if he didn't see himself in position to get any quality playing time in the near future.

If he's buried on the depth chart and was not expecting to play much in 2022, then it doesn't matter if he has to sit out 2022 at a new school. He can sit at his next school, learn the system and get acclimated to the program during the fall then compete in the spring for PT in 2023.

And yes, it's possible we could use the available scholarship to address other needs (DL).

This is a tough group of players to crack into the two deep.

We might have 3 future pros as the starters.

I hear McDonald is a future star. I know many are really high on Roon. Sparrow broke into the 2nd team and reportedly had a terrific spring. Leon Lowery played some last season. And Mekhi Mason might have the highest ceiling of any of the youngsters.

Hate to see young players leave to quickly in search of immediate playing time. It should be clear this system makes stars of the linebackers who play in it. It should be clear the staff knows how to coach up players quickly to be successful.

There are worse things that waiting in the wings, getting your body and mind 100% ready so that when your chance comes, you are in position to take advantage.

I wish Matthew well wherever he ends up. I have a feeling Schiano is going to be all over him.

It would be great if they can restrict portal activity to after bowl season and before preseason practice. Don’t need these distractions.

He went in the portal in June.
