left vs. right

it's a great advantage to be able to shoot with both!

My daughter is a lefty but she can hit the volleyball equally as well with her right hand. Confuses the defense.

I do not understand why some folks are making a big deal about a lefty taking shots with the right hand. Anyone who has played much bball has learned to use both hands without even thinking about it.
Ask Rick Jackson etc. It is amazing to me how college players haven’t developed their off hands.

use both hands to shoot/pass/dribble? I think the guys who do it well is way under 10%

Jimmy does everything right handed in life except shoot a basketball from outside.

CJ nods his head in agreement.

EVERYBODY knew CJ was gonna drive to his left - but at least in college, few could stop him.

The exact opposite is Devo.
He's An Absolute Magician at the rim with either hand - his L may actually be better than his R.

Rak's senior year he showed great progress using his off hand just as well as his right. Really was something to see.

As to whether or not you can do it without thinking, I don't know about that. I've been playing hoops for going on 40+ years now and I can assure you I still 'think' about using my left hand. Sometimes it's successful, more often it's not. And I still play a couple few times a week.

Especially making a big deal out of it at the highest level of division 1.

I never had much of a.left in bball. Barely did for lax. You have to put in a lot of work

It’s one thing to have coaches do layup drills, dribbling drills saying “okay now only using your left hand” then “now your right”. It tricks players into believing that they are now ambidextrous vs choosing which ever hand intuitively in game situations gets you the better angle on a shot or drive. Unless that player on his own uses his offhand in pickup games, practice etc, can utilize and judge the situations where using this skill gives him(her) an advantage, old habits unfortunately will win out. It is very hard work.

Bummer, I thought this was a discussion about Twix:

Being lefty is different from being righty. Very few lefties are all !efty all the time. Perhaps we also think a bit differently?

When I was younger and learning how to play, I would take a shot right-handed and then take the same shot left-handed, over and over. I would then go to a different shot and do the same. My right hand taught my left hand how to shoot. My jump shots were always right-handed, but lay-ups, reverse lay-ups, hooks, whatever were from both sides.

When i was in middle school our Gym coach was our HS bball coach.. if you were in the bball system you were never allowed to bring the ball up in gym or lunch or anyplace he could see you with your dominate hand, if you were dribbling anyplace other than when it needed to be your dominate hand you were expected to be using your weaker hand. When my kid came up thru his schools system I told him to use his off hand as much as he could in pick up games or gym or any time in practice where you were just dribbling spot to spot and his coaches yelled at him for doing it..

You see some pretty good pros who cant go off hand all that well.. But most of them have gotten so good at reverse spin with the dominate hand it doesnt matter except for when it would protect the shot block.
