Legalized gambling on college sports?

Yeah, it would be far far far far too easy to coax a broke college kid to fix a game. No way this can happen.

Was it hard for the kid at Arizona St to fix games for illegal gambling? Having it legal means that the books are watching and they pick up when thins seem fishy a lot faster than any law enforcement agency.

Yep, if I remember that's exactly how they got busted. Whoever was in on it was putting the money down in Vegas. Instead of a usual $10k total for a midweek, regular season game with 2 average teams, the book was like $500K or more, so the casino went right to the authorities.

But the referees already do it!

Billions are already being bet on college and pro sports so the threat of point shaving/fixing is already there. Silver of the NBA is in favor of legalization because he wants to find a way to tap into some of that revenue. Seems like one area where the government could get a cut of the action instead of the mob. In Europe and other locales sports betting has been legal for a long time.

I would rather see marijuana legal. We have too many people in prison for non-violent crimes. The history around prohibition is it's a big waste of time and money. Plus the people in this country are too mean and angry.

Why not both?

There's absolutely no logical reason that sports betting is illegal and no logical reason that alcohol and nicotine are the only legal non prescription drugs.

I like how you think. It's unconstitutional for the federal government to make such bans on cannabis anyhow, and states are starting to put their foot down and realizing they can make a lot of revenue from taxes, as well as cut crime, as statistics in CO have shown. Anyhow, it seems like you have some John Lennon in you, and you're right that there is no reason we can't have both, and then some, imagine.

I was a watching "Cops" the other night and they arrested a young woman for having a small baggie of marijuana in her car. She was crying as they drove away. I'm not a user but it seemed so sad and silly to me. The cop said, "We're getting dangerous drugs off the street". Really?

It's a product of how society has been programmed to thing by the powers that be, through their minions, the mainstream media. Plenty of officers support legalization. Wouldn't be better if our tax dollars were spent to fight actual crimes, rather than create revenue through the "justice system" and the draconian laws that allow the government to take away everything you own for certain drug charges? And the stings they set up for such things, along with prostitution, are in the spirit of entrapment whether or not some judge has said otherwise.

Kudos my man. It's refreshing when I see folks having empathy for others we've been taught to label as criminals. Regarding that quote, I'm not sure if it would be more sad if the cop was routinely repeating that propaganda, or if he sincerely believed he was telling the truth. When the justice system became a machine to create revenue, the spirit of justice left the building.

Bill Maher said the Ferguson police department, which w as found to be issuing tickets, (85% of African Americans), to support the department' budget, should have a motto of "To Collect and Serve".

I agree, but the sad part is that folks dont seem to realize that is the main duty of the majority of police departments these days, and not just Ferguson. They serve alright, but it isn't the citizens they serve.
