Len Elmore has a lot to say about Maryland basketball

funny - syracuse fans are at an obnoxious level of sarcastic comments about hiring from within. And Len Elmore is at a pretty obnoxious level of demanding to hire from within.

hindsight is always 20/20.

If you have a great candidate sure. The problem is Syracuse hired from within a program that had a losing season and had been on a downward trajectory for years.

The other problem is Syracuse wanted to go in a new direction (with man) so their internal higher made little sense.

The new hire (Red) wanted to go m2m. Syracuse, as a program/institution/athletic department, was indifferent to the type of defense the coach runs, as any school would be.

It’s also worth noting that the downswing was entirely attributable to the head coach’s failures to bring in talent, either from high school or the portal. There is/was hope that the Red was going to improve that and it wasn’t wild to think that an internal hire could do that, it was the one consistent ‘pro’ about Red that was shared most consistently here.

The unknown with Red was his X’s and O’s coaching. It’s looking like that might be his downfall.

Any transition was going to be messy in one way or another. There’s no guarantee with outside hires and the norm is that new coaches struggle, whether internal or external. This move was meant to smooth the transition, which wasn’t entirely without merit. At worst, if next season goes poorly, it has solidified an external coaching search and all it cost us was 2 seasons that, statistically, would have been more likely to be bad than good if we went external right away. 2 years in the grand scheme of things, in the context of an 8+ year slide, isn’t that much.

That's not what I recall hearing John Wildhack say.

Kevin Willard produced good results. Problem is school did not support him.
i do think its kind of funny to leave maryland to go to villanova because of support. i just dont know in what world villanova is able to support more than maryland.

Maybe I missed it. When did he say it? I’m skeptical any AD would care about the style of play of any of their sports teams, as it relates to a criteria for a coaching hire.

Maryland AD has major fiscal issues and Nova NIL can focus on just basketball.

Len is missing the point, you need to go out and hire the best talent available, thats how it works in the business world, the real world. SU fball hired Doug Marrone, he went to the NFL, stuff happens. He cites UNC, ehh I dont think they are thrilled with Davis at the moment. They probably would be ecstatic for MD to take him, lol.

Most of the family hires fail. Duke is an exception because it is almost impossible to fail there but I give credit to Scheyer for assembling a super team this year.

Welcome to the coaching carousel world Lenny.

Matt Painter and Mark Pope would like a word.

A lot of coaching hires fail. Most actually.

That said I get the Willard frustration. He lasted 3 years.
