Obviously, we have not seen anything close to the whole playbook yet, but there are signs it might be pretty good.

Let's get all of the disclaimers out of the way- 1) yes, it was only Rhode Island; 2) we are limited by Dungey's inexperience; 3) so far, the red zone has been the same old same old; other than a few spectacular plays, we didn't look so good.

I missed our first series but I had a chance to look at the replay this morning and I think there is more here than initially meets the eye.
  1. First, let's tackle the redzone issue. We actually had two plays work for touchdowns in the RZ that will not make it to the record books. Dungey obviously scored and the refs blew the call and later we had a TD called back for, of all reasons, 5 men in the backfield! Things like this are probably to be expected early in the season with kids and a new offence. We also had two drives stalled by strange errors like the snap over Dungey's head and some botched execution of a few plays. Again. new players and system.
  2. We only had 4 penalties for 30 yards. Let me repeat that - we only had 4 penalties for 30 yards. I would hasten to add that one was a questionable interference call and one was a false start by a first year starter. I already mentioned the costly illegal formation. This may be an indication that the offense is really easy for the kids to learn and they are comfortable with it.
  3. Wake Forest has a pretty good defense. Certainly not the best we will play this year - probably about the average of what we will face. We had no turnovers.
  4. Dungey leads the ACC with the most yards per attempt with 11.2.

I really liked the lack of yellow flags. It was almost spooky. In the third quarter, friend Gary started to say, "Have you noticed there aren't many..." and I shushed him before he could say The Word. The discipline of this young team is heartening - - - so far!

Lester's offense: no big mistakes (sacks, fumbles, interceptions), very few penalties, 2 long pass plays, and maybe a small handful of other good plays. A small handful.

It was enough to win, helped by a pick-six.
Yes, Wake has good linebackers and overall an average defense.

It will take time and experience for the offense to get going. I think it's much better already over last years cluster . Better flow to the game and better play calling

Lester's been creative at times, but it seemed like the second and third quarters consisted of 20 consecutive halfback dives for minimal gains.

Hopefully we're a little more balanced going forward. It's apparent that Dungey can make the throws.

what it felt like and what we actually called though was far different. we were aggressive the 2nd/3rd, yeah we ran some but the play calling was limited because we only ran a few plays

Dungey throwing the ball effectively is only going to help the run game, our offense isn't athletic enough anywhere to be one dimensional, O Line isn't good enough either for that.

I actually like Lester's play calling and I hate to say it, ( Coach P voice) " it's very very multiple"

Still too reliant on running on 1st & 2nd down with the inevitable 3rd and long pass play. Have to be more willing to throw on 1st & 2nd.

I think Lester's field is more vertical than horizontal. We had 14 plays that gained 9 yards or more. Seven passes and seven runs. Four of the seven 9+ yard runs were by Dungey. I thought most of our passes were downfield, which is a very different look from the recent past. Seven of Dungey's 8 completions went for 9+ yards. When he's throwing, he's not looking to dump the ball off at the line of scrimmage. His range and vision are good and think that fits what Lester is trying to do. We had 13 runs that gained 5+ yards. It may not be a lot, but it's more than a little. The defense was responsible for 10 of our 30 points, so our offense still beat theirs. I do believe that the crowd noise helped and hope fans can do their part. We need the home field advantage.

Yeah, I say this without benefit of my usual Sunday replay; you're probably right, but it felt repetitive when it was happening.

Peoples keep pointing to the run 1st mentality in the 1st half. I can almost guarantee you they were trying to make life as easy as possible for ED. All of the throws were short easy reads to get him in rhythm.

What happens next is dependent on how quick ED comes along, but, as the season goes and he sees more and mor defenses I'm willing to be you'll see progressively more aggressive game plans.

You can't look at our offense in a vacuum, it will grow and develop as we do. It's year one in this system with an 18 year old at the helm. What you see today might be polar opposite of what you see tomorrow.

lester's offense is going to look very different this year depending on whether you look at yards per game or yards per play

against FBS (1 game for us, I know) SU is 13th in yards per play and 73rd in yards per game.

pace and plays per game will be very stanfordian. i don't know if this is just a response to doing the opposite of everything mcf***it did or if it has to do with limiting the damage our secondary can do. hopefully someday, SU can incorporate a faster pace (next year?) because it helps teams that aren't completely inferior. maybe they're optimizing their offense for their games against FSU and Clemson where we will probably always be at a per play disadvantage.

Lester said they can speed it up - but haven't due to ED.
