I first suggested this "sistership" idea during the G-Rob years. My suggestion was the Michigan State Spartans, who have several Syracuse connections, aren't that far away and are doing quite well right now. - Biggie Munn took his entire staff from Syracuse to East Lansing in 1947 to turn the Spartans into a naitonal power. - One of them was SU grad Duffy Daughtery, brother of Jean Daughtery whom locals might remeber as the "play lady" on the kiddie show "The Magic Toy Shop, among other things she did on local TV. - Duffy became the head coach of the Spartans after Munn retired to the AD job and became one of the most famous and best-liked coaches of the 50's and 60's, noted for his sense of humor. "it's bad luck to be behind at the end of a game." - He was a great friend of Ben Schwartzwalder and their teams often scrimmaged together, a common practice in those days. - George Perles was good friend of Coach Mac's. - If Donnie McPherson didn't win the 19987 Heisman, it should have gone to MSU's Lorenzo White. Both were cheated by Tim brown and the Notre Dame aura. - Both schools were pioneers in using black players. - Both schools were national powers in the 50's and 60's but faded, primarily due to the additional recruiting requirements of the two platoon era and the resulting supremacy of Penn State, Ohio State and Michigan. - Both got tired of looking up at those football factories and made comebacks but have had trouble sustaining success. But the Spartans look like they've built their program up to the level it was in the Munn-Daughtery years and are an example to SU as we try to regain our past glory. Keep in mind this isn't about abandoning Syracuse at all. it's about having another school out there that we also root for. One that is doing better than we are at the moment. It could tide us over until we get good again. it's just a friendly, half-serious suggestion.
