What might his staff look like?

He might have friends at other schools, etc but looking only at the places he has coached, here are some likely candidates:

From his time at Stanford (played 1993-94 before transferring):

He played under Bill Walsh.

From his time at Nebraska (played 1995-97, GA 2002):

Turner Gill was his QB coach. Frank Solich was the RB coach.
Played on two NC teams under Tom Osborne.

From his time with the NY Jets (as a player, 1998-2000):

First two years he played under Bill Parcells, then spent a year under Al Groh. Bill Belichick was the DC under Parcells. Dan Henning was the OC in 2000, Mike Nolan was the DC, Bob Sutton was the LB coach and John Lott was the strength guy.

From his time with the Cleveland Browns (as a player, 2001):

Butch Davis was the HC. Bruce Arians was the OC. Todd McNair was RB coach. Todd Bowles was the nickel back coach. Chuck Pagano was the DB coach.

From his time with the Green Bay Packers (as a player, 2002-03):

Mike Sherman was the HC. Jeff Jagodzinski was TE coach. He is currently the OC at Georgia State. Ed Donatell was the DC, is currently the DB coach for the Bears. Bo Pelini was LB coach. Lionel Washington was the DB coach. He was just fired, served as co-DC/DB coach at Tulane. The QC control/special teams coach was Stan Drayton.

From his time with Tampa Bay (as a player 2003):

John Gruden was the HC.

From his time at Kansas State (GA 2006):

Ron Prince was the HC. James Franklin was the OC. Raheem Morris was the DC.

From his time at Northern Iowa (LB coach, Co-DC: 2007-2008):

Chris Klieman was the secondary coach. He is now the HC at North Dakota State and will probably be a BCS HC in a couple of years.

Erik Chinander was the TE coach. He followed Frost to Oregon, then followed Jerry Azzinaro and Chip Kelly from there to the Philadelphia Eagles, then returned to Oregon, where he is currently the LB coach (and has a reputation as a tireless recruiter).

From his time at Oregon: (WR. OC/QB: 2009-2015):

Jerry Azzinaro coached with Frost at Oregon from 2009-12. He is currently the DL coach for the Eagles and presumably will shortly be looking for a job. He . He is from New England and has extensive experience coaching and recruiting in the East, including a 4 year stint at Syracuse. He would probably be a candidate to be the DC.

Ryan Day is the QB coach with the Eagles. He has 9 years experience coaching at Temple and BC, with the last 3 as an OC. Given his familiarity with Kelly's system, one would think he would be on the same page as Frost. Would think he would be a strong candidate to coach QBs and be OC.

If Azzinaro is named the DC, Bill McGovern would make sense as a LB or DB coach. Another guy with extensive experience coaching and recruiting in the East, he was a force recruiting NJ for BC.

Bob Bicknell, son of Jack, is also on the staff of the Eagles and might be a fit as a TE or WR coach. Another guy from the East with experience recruiting this area.

Brian Smith is an LB coach with the Eagles. He went to UMass and coached there for a couple of years. He could also be a fit if Frost is looking for someone with ties to the East.

And Greg Austin is an OL coach with the Eagles. Attended Nebraska (he is also 10 years younger than Scott). Coached offense at Oregon with Scott from 2010-12. Could also be a fit.

Great research. I have no idea how these things generally work, but with all of those Eagles ties Frost would be without a staff for a while. I can't imagine that would be common for over a month after a HC hire. Of course, we would probably be looking at some and not all of those names...

Well done Tom... quite the list.

I know of at least a few of our (former) assistants who already have interviews lined up elsewhere. Would really like to see a few of them stick around because they are quality coaches.

Nice write up Tomcat! Too much noise out there to be sure who it is. A lot of people will be dissappointed if no announcement is made tomorrow.

EDIT: Anyway - the sooner this is over the sooner the new HC can start getting his coaches in place before the pickings get slim. The race is on.

This is an important announcement and one that could bring more attention to SU football than anything has in a long time so I suspect they are going to pick a time that it gets maximum exposure. It would suck if 3 or 4 other hirings are announced and SU gets lost in the shuffle a bit. We need a good publicist for this announcement.

McGovern is an interesting name. Even if Azzinaro isn't the link, could be a conversation between Frost and Kelly if Frost wanted to give him the DC role. I don't know enough about what was going on at BC at the time, but he was DC under Spaz from 2009 to 2012. First 2 years, D was very good. 3rd, eh, 4th, really bad. But he probably also recruited the guys who saw it improve last year and this year.

What is Raheem Morris up to? Why would the Eagles staff all leave to come back to college for what is probably less pay?

My only question about all those Eagle folks is that wouldn't they likely go with chip Kelly to wherever he lands at next?

Because the Eagles staff is more than likely going to be jobless soon.

Maybe but then Chip will either go to USC or to the Titans again two spots that can and will pay more? Not like Kelly will be jobless. And Frost might not be able to wait that long to hire assistants they need to recruit now.

And if it's not done sooner, it's the Sooners' staff I'd be looking at next.

When tomcat comes sliding in with the casual "let's assume it's Frost..." post, you know that things just got turned up to 11.

Nobody should be surprised by what you are able to piece together, Tom. Great post.

Azzinaro and Day make a lot of sense.

I can add one small tidbit to your research. Chinander and Frost were roommates during their time at Northern Iowa.

I'm definitely interested in how things will unfold, don't get me wrong. But I still see that we're hiring a guy with no head coaching experience, who may or may not hire coordinators with no coordinating experience. And our AD is hiring someone who, if I recall, he himself decided wasn't good enough for Boise State not too long ago.

The one box I had as a must is previous HC experience. Color me unimpressed.

I saw Azzinaro speak at a coaching conference two years ago. Nothing but nice things to say about 'Cuse. He's one of the more lively, entertaining people in the business. Let Jerry be Jerry, I say. He'd be fun.

He might have liked Frost more, but the pressure to go homegrown was really really strong at Boise.

What bothers me is that a peer program like Rutgers is looking at head coaches -- Schiano, Fleck and Golden -- while we seem to be targeting coordinators.

Hey, maybe it's no big deal.

golden heck no, fleck staying out and Schiano sure whatever

Who is Oregon's "passing game coordinator" those guys are usually next in line for OC so maybe Frost can take him from Oregon for his OC if Oregon looks in a different direction?
