Let's make it a poll

If you score in the final seconds, do you go for 2 or kick it?

In the post "Overtime", below there is a discussion of whether it's better, when you score a touchdown in the final seconds of regulation to get within a point, to go for two and decide the issue right there or take your chances in overtime, (Michigan State just won this one on a blocked field goal). Both situations could go either way but if you go for it in regualtion, you deny the other team a chance, (at least an equal one) to win.

If I have the chance to win a game, do you know what I do?

I decide to win the game, and I win the game.

I don't think there's a "one size fits all" answer. It depends on the circumstances, including if your team has the momentum, whether you are playing at home or on the road, the field/weather conditions, confidence in your defense, important players who may be injured, confidence in your snapper/holder/kicker, etc.

You're way overthinking it. You play to win. If you have an opportunity to win, you seize it.

You just scored a touchdown in the final seconds. Your team has the momentum.

In pros, I think it should be an easy decision. Go for it. In college, I think you do have to consider more. But many more times than not, I say go get the win.

I'd like to agree with you, but I can't envision any circumstance in which the right play is to prolong the game when you have the opportunity to win it in the moment.

I just made almost this same post in the other thread before seeing this one. Shoulda read all the threads to get caught up before posting.

Since the poll doesn't distinguish, the type of OT (pro or college) is also a consideration. Do you want to risk the game on one play, one drive (with a chance to redeem yourself in NCAA OT), or one period (risking a big return, first down, and losing without ever getting the ball in NFL OT)?
