I was in Liverpool High School yesterday and while walking by the gym there were two schedule posters for college football teams up: Notre Dame and Rutgirls.

What's up with that?

Got me wondering how our program is thought of by the local high school coaches, etc.?

As a NYS HS coach I can tell you that we get mail (most of it junk) from every college you can think of including SU. Before Coach P took over at UConn I would get a "Drill of Week" mailing about 30 times a year. The most mail that I get comes from SU, UConn, Rutgers, Pitt, Notre Dame and Penn State. During the season at least one mailing a week and during the offseason probably one a month. Not all schools send poster type mailings. I don't think I usually get poster type mailings from SU.

Overall I think Coach Marrone and staff have done a good job reaching out to NYS coaches. However, most coaches still have fonder feelings for Coach P and many our still upset with SU for dumping him as hiring that other clown. As a graduate I am always going to be a supporter of SU, but I can tell you Coach Marrone has a way to go before he completely wins back NYS coaches. It also hurts that he seems to ignore some potential upstate recruits in favor of downstate ones.

While I hear and believe what you are saying, here is what I have never gotten. Why did upstate coaches not send that many kids to SU under P? At least in his last several years, we did not do much at all in upstate. When the coach everyone hates got here, we all of a sudden started to get more of the top upstate kids. If P was so loved, why so few top kids? The same can be said about NJ. They always loved P and mainly D, but stopped sending their kids this way.

My father has been a head coach for 35 years and has had one kid get a D1 scholarship. He has had 9-10 kids capable of playing D1. In my 6 years (coaching at a larger school) I have had two, one is currently on the SU roster.

So basically my experience is limited. With that being said, I can say that even under Coach P upstate was not highly recruited. Most of the coaches liked P and D because they were so inviting to NYS HS coaches. As a young assistant I went with my father and another coach up to SU during spring practice one year. Coach P and D allowed us to sit in on position meetings before practice go on the field during practice and answered all the questions we had.

As far upstate recruits I don't know of that many kids who were recruited by SU and went elsewhere. Another thing to consider is how coaches deal with recruiting. I tell every single one of my players who wants to play at any level to figure out what they want to study. This automatically narrows down their college list. I do this because it is a huge longshot for 99.9% of kids to go pro. Plus it saves the recruiters' time and my own time by not sending out film to colleges that don't offer the kid's desired academic program.

So it sounds like while P&D were accommodating to upstate coaches, they didn't recruit their players?

Tyvon Branch, Jo-lon Dunbar, Will Smith, Doug Fulmer

A friend of mine's ex-husband was one of the top defensive players in the state his senior year out of Chittenango in the late 90s. He was a NT- 6'5", 300+, etc. He ended up at Kansas State because, according to him, P & D didn't even consider him.

Like I said my experience is limited and a HS coach only has a certain amount of influence. Many times as much as a coach likes a college coach and/or a school, it may not be a fit for the player.

I can say that my friend who was the one player my father has coached who took a scholarship offer wasn't offered by SU until he had basically already made his decision. He went to Rutgers, but was offered by Wake Forest, Indiana, Purdue, along with quite a few MAC schools. Nothing great, but SU didn't offer until it was too late when he was in their backyard.

Thanks for the insight guys - interesting responses in this thread.

So what were you at LHS for yesterday? Was it the baseball hitting camp? The baseball coaches clinic? The girls basketball skills clinic? Lax practice? Or the pool party? ;)

Coaches clinic - had a prior engagement and couldn't get my son to the hitting clinic unfortunately. Pool party sounded like they were having fun though.
