I thought we knew that (story right before the season), but I could be wrong on that. EDIT: found it. http://www.syracuse.com/orangefootball/index.ssf/2013/08/syracuse_coach_scott_shafer_ho_1.html The story ends with a phone call and two text messages from January 2013. They were the collective efforts of Charley Loeb and Macky MacPherson, two upperclassmen and vocal leaders for Syracuse, who were speaking on behalf of their teammates. On the receiving end was Daryl Gross, the athletic director at SU tasked with hiring a replacement for Doug Marrone. From the moment he heard Marrone would be leaving for Buffalo, MacPherson was nervous. Of all people, he knew the importance of selecting a football coach from within the Orange family, and Shafer was the obvious choice. Loeb agreed wholeheartedly. Both players began reaching out to their teammates seeking input and feedback on the idea of Shafer being promoted from defensive coordinator. The response was overwhelming support. They obtained Gross' cell phone number and each sent him a text message. Loeb followed up with a phone call and voicemail. They wanted Gross to know that, if the team's opinion mattered, Shafer was their guy. "I think everyone loved it automatically when Shafer was hired," MacPherson said. "They know that he's passionate, loves this university, he wants to win and there's no other person he cares more about than this team."
