They were the collective efforts of Charley Loeb and Macky MacPherson, two upperclassmen and vocal leaders for Syracuse, who were speaking on behalf of their teammates. Both players began reaching out to their teammates seeking input and feedback on the idea of Shafer being promoted from defensive coordinator. The response was overwhelming support.

They obtained Gross' cell phone number and each sent him a text message. Loeb followed up with a phone call and voicemail. They wanted Gross to know that, if the team's opinion mattered, Shafer was their guy.
