Given how we closed the season on a 5-1 run with some impressive wins and qualified for a bowl, I'm looking forward to seeing how the coaches are able to translate that into closing on the recruiting trail.

It's been a long time since we got a commitment from Gus Edwards--things seemed to be rolling at the time. Can't wait to see how the coaches "close" on the class of 2013.

Let's Go Orange!!!

we heard a lot about how excited the coaches were about recruiting this year and how well it was going over the summer and during the early part of the season. I hope that was all in fact true and we start to see the results of that optimism soon.

However you judge the summer recruiting results (small in numbers, good in QBs, missed on OL, DBs), the staff is scrambling now to complete the class.

Next weekend (December 8) is huge. The yield from new offers to JUCOs will also make or break this class.

In this late scramble, it is terrific that the staff can sell the program by pointing to the high powered offense, the strong November finish, a second bowl in 3 years. That is the rosy side to coming out of the summer with a small yield. As for those earlier reports that this was wrapped up . . .

A couple of things.

  • The thing that drives many here nuts is how DM runs his program. Having gone to SUNY Cortland and spending three summers cleaning the players rooms for the Jets and doing other things to support the Jets stay in Cortland (being a fly on the wall) I saw how a professional program is run. The difference is, in college, many teams let it all hang out. We might assume that recruiting is slow, but when its time to play on Sunday (signing day) all the work from the week before is revealed. Have faith in the Force young Jedi's.
  • DM has created a very professional and solid foundation that will yield dividends. That is evident in how the players begin here as teens and leave here as men. Many say that he has turned a corner where I argue that he has laid a foundation. The foundation is the least flattering part of building a structure, yet, when it is laid properly and true, the rest of the structure seems to spring forth out of the ground.
  • DM's program is not a burden on the academic side of the university, yet his players are truly student athletes and graduate with legit degrees. How many programs can say this? It will only strengthen our alum base.

Didn't know where to put this. Found this on the basketball board but couldn't find anything here about him. Anyone have info on this kid...

Godspower could room with his Nigerian buddy Chinonso 2 years down the road.

In his profile his career interest is listed as Computer Engineer.

It says he would like to visit SU, UNC & G Town.

It also says that he has only been playing football for one year and has a high interest in SU. Not sure when that was written but a message board mentioned that he played football for Kearney in 2009.

Down below it states that he is being recruited by Ty Wheatley.

Here is a nice wrap up of Section 5 football players & where they are & where they are headed

I can't agree more with this post. Marrone didn't just implement a quick fix like many new coaches do. He changed the culture and laid the foundation for a long term successful turnaround. It didn't yield the impressive quick results we hoped for. There were growing pains for sure. But in the end, this program is far better off for Marrone doing it this way.

We have more commits than the 9 or whatever listed.

Do you know any specific names? I am willing to bet Smith is pretty much one of them ... which means Cali will be running around humping legs all summer until the 2013 season starts.

and then it's on to Charles Davis and how he should be given 44 out of JUCO because he looks so fast on tape...

If we get Smith...I'll be doing cartwheels naked through the streets after chugging seven bottles of tequila in a 44 second stretch.

Roughly 4 more to be exact.
I really hope Joe Walker is among the four.

If I had to guess, I'd throw two other names out there: L. Smith and the JUCO OL Miller.

Devante Bond is who I want of all the JUCOs we are recruiting. Good offers, good size, good talent.

I say it's smith and Ogundeko. Another possibility is PSU transfers, no one seems to be considering this.

Oh, I agree but where does he project...DE or OLB?

From what I've read and seen from tape, I'd love to get a guy like Walker. Very good size and listed at 4.5...not bad for a MLB. We'd finally have someone with enough size that could successfully take on blockers and speed (reported) to run side line to side line.

Could not agree with you anymore. Thank you for the post.

I think Bond might be a rush end. I'd like both kids but Joe Walker looks like he could solve our MLB issue.

The only way this class breaks is if there are decommits. Many of the players being pursued are icing on the cake for what is a strong class.
