Louisville game last night reminded me of a game from 2003

the win at Michigan State, 76-75 in East Lansing!!!!!

My brother and I were discussing the same thing last night. That win over MSU was considered by most to be the cornerstone win for that 2003 team. It showed that we could go into a hostile environment, take a teams best shot, and still survive. I think Troy Weaver said in the OO video that he knew after that game we could win the whole thing. That win certainly cemented the seeding we received by the selection committee.

I think our guys learned a lot about themselves last night, good and bad. And, as in 2003, I think that win cemented our seed. All we need to do is take care of business the next two weeks and the #1 overall should be ours.

We weren't a #1 seed in 03...

Dude I thought of the exact same thing while in the shower this morning.

Um...TMI...sorry. The similarities are there though

Good call. Both were tough games with numerous chances to lose. Somehow gutted it out and got the win.

If I remember correctly, Chris Allen was something like 10 of 13 from 3 but no one else did anything

That MSU game was my favorite game of the 2003 regular season (okay, my second fave game after Pitt at the Dome) -- even though I did not technically see it. I was on a tour in Cuba so I was getting play-by-play on a rented Cuban cell phone from Fishy who was watching the game on TV in Poughkeepsie. I was with a group of SU folks who were also interested in the game, so I was relaying Fish's PBP to them. Someone took a funny picture of the group clustered around me in the lobby of the famous Hotel Nacional while the tour guide stood there perplexed. As I recall, it was probably Craig Forth's best game of the season -- at least the way in which Fish relayed the last few minutes.

Anyhow, there is a funny sidelight to the story. US cell phones did not work in Cuba, so one had to rent a Cuban cell phone after putting down a huge deposit. When I returned the phone to the hotel clerk upon departure, he said I was the first person EVER to have charges that exceeded the deposit! And I still have my $362 bill to prove it!

Chris Hill*. Yeah he was unconscious from deep. If I remember correctly, Melo was 5-5 from three that game.

i actually said the same thing in a thread last night that got buried.. that was the game we all kinda started to think this team was special .. i got the same feeling last night

It is funny you mention that game. It was the one that got me hooked on road games (that and moving 600miles from the Dome)

Specifically I went there to meet a buddy who had moved to Minnesota, and the last game we have watched together was that 2000 Mich St. fiasco.

I specifially sought out their Glass Basketball Case and stared at it for a good 20 minutes.

I know. We were a 3 seed. However, that victory earned us respect with the committee and helped us get the reward of playing in Boston and Albany. The rest is history.
