Are they 100% M2M? If they play any zone, they were dumb tonight. Their M2M allowed us to get penetration much easier. Frank and Brissett were getting in the lane but Battle was abusing his man. Penetration is so much more difficult against a zone and then you have to be able to make 3's which is not a game to game strength as a team and we have no 45% deadeyes.

I was thinking the same thing; there was plenty of space for our guards to get into the lane. Padgett isn't ready to be a P5 head coach, clearly.

Yeah. They are eating us up inside them failed to go inside during the last 6 minutes.

Plus, they lost their man from time to time. Marek gets the ball in the short corner and just walked in for a dunk.

The offense actually seemed more fluid against their zone because they weren’t sagging and collapsing like other teams. Poor scouting on their part and we capitalized. When they switched to pressure m2m it took awhile to adjust, but yet again it looked like they didn’t watch any film. At the end of the day we all needed this desperately and hats off on hanging in down the stretch. Bayer needs to get a few more minutes so he’s not shtting bricks out there.

Surprised considering Pitino’s penchant for recruiting speedy guards but they seemed to be be straight line quick but rather slow moving laterally. Maybe they feared covering our taller guards going off on the 3 point line or on jumpers so Padgett preferred funneling them towards their big men where they believed they had a big advantage. Our guys this game did well not from pure layups off drives but from short bankshots , short jumpers off drives and 3 pointers. Crazy theory but you are right their defense just didn’t work.

They did play some match up looking zone but it was very loosie goosie. Just don't know why they didn't just go with a straight up zone, don't extend it and make us shoot them out of it.

Pitino stressed defense a lot and used to mix M2M with zone. Padgett is not nearly as adamant about defense as Pitino was (or doesn't seem to be). It shows, not just in this game, but throughout their season.

While questioning the scheme is interesting, my takeaway is that they flat out didn't play with anything near the intensity one would expect of a Pitino team.

Believe Padgett implied that himself at halftime, but maybe telling that he can't inspire the same ferocity.

We were getting some penetration from others from the sides, rather than only top of the key. That really made it easier for us.

I wonder if their lack of lateral quickness compounded with the height disparity (Snyder, Perry and McMahon are 6’ to 6’2) made him think that m2m pressure like Va etc used, would be better. They are not VA defensively.

Particularly after Oshae got #4. Go zone.

Their fans were saying the same on their board.

What a contrast after playing UVA on Saturday. Almost makes me wonder how they got 6 ACC wins?

you could tell by how they press that they dont have the team quickness they usually have.. thats why the guards could turn the corner for the first time in weeks.

Poor coaching.

Absolutely no defensive adjustments. In fact it seems the only changes Padgett made were aimed at improving the offense at the expense of defense. Expected more rim protection from their bigs too. Surprising as their defensive metrics are so strong and they have done it against the meat of the conference schedule.
