During the game I noticed something. Everyone was switching on all screens. We’ve haven’t done that in years. That tells me that JB thinks all of his defenders are relatively equal, which I would think means that we will play a lot more M2M than in years past. He has had to hide a bad defender forever. Not this year….so instead of telling guys to fight over a screen to prevent mis-matches, he’s letting them switch. I think that means more M2M.

I think we'll see more pressing too.

At least until January when he settles on his 8 man rotation and it's back to 2-3

I couldn't believe the amount of switching either. There are a lot of interchangeable parts on this team so Man is a real option this year.
Our press blows so I don't think we will see a whole lot of it this year unless we fall behind big or just for a quick tempo changer.

So you're saying that our defense has a chance to be really multiple this year...

The one guy who scares me in particular is Joseph. He gets caught looking at the ball way too much and teams will be able to exploit this using backdoors very effectively.

The rotations will also need to be tweaked if we do see more M2M this year. Once a guy got beat last night, it was one pass and a layup.

Hope we do see it a bit more. Won't be 50/50, and probably not even 70/30, but if it's 85/15 or 80/20, I think it can be very effective.

Also liked what little I saw of the press. We have a lot of long athletes at the top that can get in passing lanes (Fair, Christmas), and Keita at the back end can get down the floor quickly and block some shots.

Not only is this the deepest team in years, but it's also the most versatile IMO. A lot of interchangeable parts.

I didn't really break down the defense but I did notice a 3-2 zone which had Dion at the top guarding the point man and 2 defenders pushed out to the wings to defend the 3 point shot while we had 2 bigs on either block. I really think that will be a good wrinkle for teams that knock down the 3 consistently. Maybe JB finally realized that the 2-3 does have it's share of weaknesses and maybe this will be just the trick to throw some teams off and not go lights out from 3 on us.

That was man defense with everyone switching on the perimeter. Cal State LA was using dribble handoffs out top, and SU (as Jake pointed out) switched all screens.

I'll start thinking M2M when we play real teams. As far back as I can remember, JB has played M2M in these exhibitions and very little zone. Te only zone I noticed last night was on out of bounds plays which he does in games anyways. Maybe Hop is having an influence on JB since it will be Hops team eventually.

he coached longer with hop aint it broski ?

um yea, but with the time coming nearer of hop taking over, he has more influence possibly. he pretty much runs practice now, does tv interviews and the tv show.

Maybe we shouldn't go looking too deep into what we saw in the first scrimmage of the year against a Division II opponent....just saying - history would probably suggest that this game isn't necessarily the best place to look for answers about how the season will unfold.

Not when the real games start.

Completely agree. It was so strange to see the switch. We even jumped out on shooters!

As an aside but related, have we ever had a longer team at Syracuse. At one point I think the lineup was Fab, Xmas, MCW, Waiters and Joseph (maybe Southerland). That was a freaky long lineup...not sure another team would get a shot off with that.

If they do start doing that in real games then they need some more practice at it. Seemed to me that they didn't switch properly a lot of times, especially around the foul line, and guys were out of position. Made up for it due to athletic ability though - which won't work as well when we play for real.

Man D is a possibility, especially with Keita at center, our guards are big enough to guard forwards and our bigs are quick enough to deal with guards if they get matched up that way.

I thought it was much more pronounced by the Philly guards. They simply did not even try to fight through screens etc. This of course led to scrambling by the off-guard and anyone else involved up top. I was also wondering where certain others were on the "effort" meter defensively (Joseph and Southerland come to mind).

Peace
