The latest Sports Illustrated, (which I spent the fourth quarter reading), has a good article on the Texas and USC programs who played such a great game for the last National Championship the SEC didn't win and are now struggling with both their coaches on the hot seat. USC has that probation to partially explain their difficulties but at Texas the problem seems to be Mack Brown. The article stated that "Since 2009 Texas has signed 77 recruits ranked four stars or higher by . BYU has signed nine such players in the same period." The Cougars ran for 550 yards on the Longhorns and beat them 40-21. I don't know how many four stars Mississippi had, (probably similar to BYU), but they just beat the Longhorns by 44-23. They didn't gain as much as BYU, (272 rushing, 448 overall), but scored the last 30 points of the game.

But what got me was this little nugget of information Brown tried to recruit both Robert Griffin III and Johnny Manziel to Texas but as defensive backs. They wanted to play quarterback and so went to Baylor and Texas A&M- and won the last two Heisman trophies. Can you imagine what Texas would have been like with all that talent and first Griffin, then Manziel as their quarterback?

Sometimes coaches make mistakes about quarterbacks. And getting four star recruits can be over-rated. It's not about how good you were in high school. It's about how good you are in college.

Brown is an excellent recruiter star wise but as SWC points out the evaluation part of the equation is huge as well. This is where I like Boeheim, he knows his system and goes after who fits it along with still going after the top guys. Brown has 5 and 4 star guys wanting to play for the Horns and imagine turning down a 5 star qb to pick up a short Johnny Manziel and selling that to the incredible high $ boosters that school has? It's almost a problem of too much of a good thing.

There needs to be a change of the guard throughout UT. The stench of the good ol boys club is there and it shows it ugly head constantly.

1. Augie Garrido- Baseball coach who was suspended 4 games with pay for DWI in 2009. Has gone to the College Series 7 of his last 13 years. Hasn't gone to the College World Series since 2011.

2. Mack Brown- After his worst season in 2010 (5-7), Mack was told he had to make changes so he dropped someone. Greg Davis, OC, was dropped even though they were coming off a NC game the year before and had a rough year under sophomore Garret Gilbert(now at SMU). In 2011 and 2012, UT finished with less than 10 wins for 3 straight years. This year after losing to BYU in a blowout, Mack dropped Manny Diaz as DC.

3. Major Applewhite and Bev Kearney- In 2008, he became the running backs coach and assistant head coach at UT after being the OC at Alabama. During the Fiesta bowl game, he had relations with a student trainer for the team. Three years later, he was made co-offensive coordinator. His only punishment was his salary was frozen for one season. Bev Kearney, the long-time women's track and field head coach admitted to a relation with one of her athletes back in 2002. She was asked to resign or be fired.

4. Rick Barnes- He had his worst season in the 15 years he has been there going 16-18. From 2008 - 2011, he has recruited 14 players. Six of those players transferred, 4 left early and were drafted, 2 left early and were undrafted, and 1 did not qualify. So that leaves 1 player, Jonathon Holmes, that is left.

5. The worst is all of this has happened under DeLoss Dodds. There are reports that he is going to retire at the end of the year.

If he retires then, they might have to replace 3 major sports at UT.

Waiting for Dodds to leave, now the GRob hire makes more sense. New AD will get to hire the new football and basketball coaches and have a heck of a $kitty to entice pretty much any coach.

Grob only signed for 1 year. He didn't even want the job but agreed for 1 season since your not going to be able and go out and get someone after the season has started.

Shaggybevo.com is in full meltdown. Lots of Longhorn fans around here are vocal about the issue.

not sure how much you follow recruiting... but Ole Miss had more than 9 4 stars last year alone. heck they prob had 5 5stars last year.

And he had been consulting for them prior. As much as everyone likes to pile on Robinson, he is just in this position as a bridge until they clean house. He was helping out, held the job previously and as much as his coaching chops may be in question, he seems like a stand up guy that is doing what he can.

Hopefully the good doctor doesn't pick up the Texas AD job... then again he could make the GROB hire again and see how it plays out there.

Is he though? How hard is it to leave Texas? You can sign a class of all four-five star guys without leaving the state...and they're the biggest draw around. Sure, you might have to battle it out with aTm once in a while, but I can't imagine it's all that tough to land some big time kids if you're even a competent recruiter at UT.

Exactly. Throw out offers to the top 50 kids in Texas (they already want to go to UT, regardless) and take the first 25 that commit. At least that's what it seems like he's been doing.

Actually yes. He has lost it now due to his teams poor performances but he did a heck of a job recruiting at North Carolina as well, that's why he was hired. Guys a salesmen.

As I wrote, it's twofold...he has kids throwing themselves at Texas and as you pointed out as well, this is where evaluation comes in quite handy.
