Conference play has exposed our young secondary while our offense has shined. Complete reversal of fortunes.

Barring more boneheaded decisions from HCDB, it is easy to envision splitting our remaining games.
Only team that gives me pause is Pittsburg.

the DBs will not cover people for 5-6 secs for sure.. they did a fine job on many plays.. Wake can throw the ball why didnt every other team stop them from throwing?

we lack a pass rusher DE

I mean our D is good but for whatever reason if it’s a big spot and a down they need a stop they seem to lose focus and let the offense make a huge play.

Furthermore if it’s a drive where we can get the back back and go up 3 scores to effectively end the game they ALWAYS give up an easy TD without fail.

Last 2 weeks when they were in position to make the game 2-3 possessions in our favor if we got a stop they give up tuddies.

I'll just keep beating the drum on this - that's exactly what you should expect from your defense. It's regression to the mean.

College offenses score. We sometimes fail to realize that because we've had a lot of sucky offense in our recent program history. But they do. If our offense and defense are playing well enough at the same time to go up multiple scores that means the defense just hasn't broken yet. But inevitably it will. They don't hold forever. It's not reasonable to expect them to.

Despite that we've done fairly well rushing the passer this year. WF has only given up 9 sacks all year. That slow hand off thing they do seems to make the rush slow down.

Yeah, in the modern college game I think what you need from a D is the ability to make a few stops a game, cause a turnover or two, and ideally not get beat big too often.

Our D has the ingredients to do that, although not consistently just yet.

There's some truth to that and that's why we can't have the two offensive series we had to start the second half.

I think they should run some flea flickers out of that and really drive DC'c crazy.

Yeah, and I mean, previous to playing us, Wake's lowest rushing total in a game was 160 yards or something like that. We held them just under 100.

Our defense did about what we needed them to do for us to win that game. Not choosing to give them a long field goal try really burnt us.

I don't think they can. The whole trick of the play is the delay to see what the defense does. The RB only gets the ball if there is a seam. If the defense commits to the run, a pass should be open. It's almost a flea flicker on every play, except if the secomdary stays back you still have the option to run it.

I still just do not comprehend how we NEVER had someone in the backfield on those to force a choice. How did that happen?

It looks like that sometimes the RB has the ball and the D can make up their mind, it's an interesting style.

I think to get someone in the backfield you open a seam. We chose not to do that to hold them to the small gains. I suspect elite talent on the dline would blow that up.

I think it works well against teams with our kind of talent. If they end up winning the ACC and have to play an elite dline or if Clemson's is elite I think it'll get killed. Too much time is consumed for an elite guy to not get penetration. We don't have an elite talent and get our pressure through scheme. It was well designed to slow out scheme down.

That's why when you get a team in 4th and 13, you don't ever give a good offense a do-over , which Dino did.

Losing 3 all-ACC caliber DBs early to the NFL was bound to hurt us. We're starting to see that. Talent is there but there were bound to be growing pains.

Not sure if you are limiting your comment to the DE position exclusively, but overall one of the most pleasant surprises this year after watching the opener has been the development of a pass rush. With the 3-3-5 that pressure can come from multiple positions and we are ranked fifth in the country in sacks, do have a DE ranked 7th in the country and a LB ranked 11th.

Without pressure on the quarterback, our cornerbacks get exposed. They were brutal yesterday. They have a lot of growing up to do.

my problem is that we held back the rush too often.. Maybe because we worried about the run. but I wanted more 4-5 man pressures all night
